I was surprised to see someone from my "short list" make it to Supreme Court nomination after the Miers stunt.
From CNN.com: "This is a needlessly provocative nomination," said Sen. Pat Leahy of Vermont, the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee. "Instead of uniting the country through his choice, the president has chosen to reward one faction of his party, at the risk of dividing the country."
The only thing he is talking about, I am certain, is abortion. And if you missed it, Roe v. Wade divided the country in 1973. It hasn't been united on the issue since. No one choice will unite the country on the issue of abortion.
Further, what did Mr. Leahy think was going to happen? Bush tried to appoint a seemingly moderate woman and both parties weren't impressed. So, he went with his conservative base and picked someone "like Scalia" which is what the base wants. Did Leahy think he was going to nominate a liberal? Seriously, anybody could see that after Miers, the more conservative deluge. Maybe the left should have championed Miers.
But now they must tremble at the tyranny of mild mannered conservative Samuel Alito taking over Justice Sandy D. Swingvote's chair. Happy Halloween, democrats.
Now if Justice Stevens would somehow get off the Court... It's pretty sweet to imagine First Amendment jurisprudence without him.
