Three 25-year-old men are in custody after a takeover robbery of the Newbury Park Washington Mutual bank Wednesday morning, according to the Ventura County Sheriff's Department.

Sgt. Pat MacAuley said the robbers entered the bank yelling and brandishing handguns shortly after 10 a.m. They demanded to see the manager and be taken to the safe, where they took an undisclosed amount of cash, MacAuley said.

Capt. Larry Kelley said the robbers were described as three African-American males and that authorities throughout the area were on the lookout for any vehicle carrying three such men.

Sheriff's Department spokesman Eric Nishimoto said the suspects were spotted a short while later, pulled over on Highway 101 near Woodland Hills, and taken into custody.

Police did not release their names or cities of residence.

Witnesses told deputies that the robbers had fled the bank parking lot in a black, late-model sedan, Nishimoto said. A car matching the description was found in a residential area near the bank at 461 S. Reino Road.

MacAuley said it is believed that the suspects swapped that car for a red sedan they had left at that location.

At the time of the robbery, there were 14 people in the branch, including employees, MacAuley said. He said the robbers put guns to the heads of two people. No one was injured.

Nishimoto said many officers were involved in taking the suspects into custody, including Los Angeles and Ventura County sheriff's deputies and California Highway Patrol officers.

The bank robbery is the third in Ventura County this year, according to the FBI. A man armed with a gun robbed the Bank of the West on Victoria Avenue in Ventura on Jan. 16, and Mid-State Bank and Trust on Gonzales Road in Oxnard was robbed in a similar fashion Tuesday. MacAuley said he did not think Wednesday's robbery was related to the two previous incidents.

The FBI is investigating the possibility that the two other robberies during the past week were committed by one person.

During the Bank of the West robbery, a man entered the bank at about 5:30 p.m., walked up to a counter, pointed a handgun at a teller and demanded money, said FBI Agent Leane Blevins. He was wearing a mask, baseball cap and hood over the cap. He escaped on foot.

The suspect in Tuesday's robbery in Oxnard was wearing a bandanna-style mask, a baseball cap and sunglasses, said Blevins. He ordered everyone, including customers, to the floor before tossing a plastic bag to a teller and demanding that it be filled with cash.

No weapon was visible, but one witness said he simulated a gun by putting his hand in his pocket, Blevins said.
