1. Dwight and Lisa met during their junior years at UT. He was majoring in Accounting, and she was majoring in Pre-Law. It was lust at first sight, and they developed a relationship that was mostly based on sex.
2. Shortly before graduation, Lisa found out she was pregnant. Her first impulse was to get an abortion because law school was starting soon, but Dwight proposed, and they decided to get married.
3. Joshua Dean Moore was born on December 7, 1980. He was a healthy baby, although a little bigger than average. This would set a precedent for his entire adolescence.
4. Dwight got his Masters in Accounting, and Lisa passed the bar examine, becoming a corporate lawyer for a firm in Austin. By the time Josh was five, they hadn’t been sharing a bedroom for three years, and they had a polite/civil relationship.
5. The civility didn’t last that long after they drifted apart. When Josh was eight, it was more common that his parents ignored each other or had loud arguments behind closed doors, as if he couldn’t hear them. They also had no qualms about putting him in the middle and forcing him to choose between them for the smallest things.
6. Eating helped Josh feel better. His parents paid for a cook/housekeeper who was always cooking big meals, usually Mexican food and home cooking. In between the three meals of the day, he would snack. Anything sweet, fatty, or just convenient would end up on a plate as he listened to his parents arguing, again, and found some kind of solace in the slice of cake or bowl of ice cream.
7. When he first went to school, Josh had been looking forward to it because he loved learning and reading. He was also excited about making friends since he was only ever really around children of his parents’ clients, none of whom seemed interested in talking to him unless it was to make some rude joke about his weight.
8. Needless to say, school wasn’t anything like Josh expected. The children were even more cruel, calling him Piggy, Pudgy, and Fat Ass before they even got into middle school. When it wasn’t his weight, they picked on him for being smart and getting good grades. Josh became even more shy and antisocial, withdrawing into food and studying to avoid dealing with his classmates.
9. His parents were so wrapped up in their lives that they failed to notice any of Josh’s behavior. His mother would occasionally make comments about his weight and suggest a diet, and his father stopped inviting him to the casual client meetings because, as Josh once overheard him say, he was embarrassed by how big Josh had become.
10. Lisa found out Dwight was having an affair when Josh was thirteen. She had known he had been for years, just like she had, but they didn’t flaunt those relationships. They agreed to stay married for Josh’s sake when he was a kid, but they soon grew to practically hate each other. Lisa started having her lovers call the house and discussed them in passing, since she didn’t plan to sneak around anymore if Dwight wasn’t.
11. Josh at high school was the quintessential bullied kid. He was quiet, studious, and overweight. He was still a cute kid, and his eyes weren’t changed by the weight, but no one ever looked close enough at him to see what was behind the extra pounds. His male classmates often pulled pranks on him because they knew he wouldn’t tell on them, and his female classmates either ignored him or laughed along with the pranks.
12. He didn’t have any friends at school. Part of it was his shyness and part of it was embarrassment at the idea of ever having anyone at his home or meeting his parents. He was a loner, and the insults/pranks eventually became so routine that he was able to sort of ignore them, like he ignored his parents fighting
13. The one good thing about being ‘the nerdy fat kid’ was that his grades had been excellent. He actually graduated as Valedictorian of his high school class. He made himself sick on graduation, though, because he didn’t want to get on stage in front of his classmates to give a speech. He graduated on a Saturday. The following Monday, his parents filed for his divorce and his dad moved out. His dad is currently living in NY City with his third wife, working as a corporate and personal accountant to the Bywaters family, and his mother is living in LA, working as a corporate lawyer for Universal. Josh visits them both, though not as often in recent years.
14. After graduation, Josh moved to Fort Worth to attend TCU. He had a scholarship that paid for most of his tuition, books, and room/board. During his freshman year at TCU, Josh began to change. He was away from his parents, and he was on his own with a social roommate who didn’t seem to mind his shyness, if only because it meant he could talk more. The roommate, Dylan, became his first friend ever.
15. He also had a growth spurt during his first year at TCU. He grew several inches, and clothes no longer fit. He also had a health scare when his heart started beating too rapidly. A trip to the student clinic forced him to accept that his weight was affecting his health. This actually started a new phase in Josh’s life. He began dieting, exercising, and even took a drama class with Dylan to force himself to confront his shyness so he wouldn’t be so hindered by it anymore.
16. Josh took up swimming and eventually running. He also attended nutrition classes and learned about everything he was taking into his body whenever he ate. He started to lose weight, and keep it off, out of a desire to be healthy. He never really expected that there would be consequences like how it affected his looks with the extra weight off and how that would make people perceive him differently.
17. For a couple of years, he went from one extreme to the other. He only ate certain foods, exercised all the time, and he actually became too skinny. By the time he graduated TCU with a duel bachelors in Medical Dietetics and Athlete Training/Sports Med, he had reached a happy balance. He had originally been majoring Business, but he switched majors his sophomore year. He did get a minor in Business, since it seemed practical.
18. Dylan liked to tease him, even now, about the years when Josh was ‘annoying health commentary guy’. He would start telling people about what they were eating, tell them what they should be eating, and generally be somewhat obnoxious about them paying attention to their health even when they didn’t ask or care. Fortunately, he grew out of that and now rarely says anything unless asked.
19. After college, Josh started working as a personal trainer at a health club and got a job at a private school working with the cafeteria on nutritious meals for the kids. When he was twenty-five, he decided he wanted to own his own health club and gym, offering programs for kids and college students that could help them take care of their health. He started saving money, starting off with a chunk of college money from his parents he’d never had to use due to his scholarships, and adding to it. He also started to figure out how to be charming to clients he trained about investing or donating, since he was well-liked and, okay, maybe a few found him good due to his looks but he wasn’t so uncomfortable with that anymore that he couldn’t use it to his advantage.
20. Josh’s first sexual experience was a blowjob by a girl he tutored in English back when he was sixteen. His second sexual experience was a handjob with a boy he met when he visited his dad in NYC at age eighteen. He lost his virginity during his Freshman year, and had a casual relationship with Caleb Young for a few months following that. Then, he had about six months of casual sex with anyone who propositioned him after he’d lost the weight and grew into himself a year or so later, so to speak. That got old, fast, and he started to realize they just saw the outside and didn’t care about the inside. He became a lot more particular then about who shared his bed, and he’s been celibate now for a little over two years because he’s been busy working on his health club and hasn’t had time to cut through the bullshit to find someone not interested simply because he’s good-looking.
21. Josh finally got the money and loan he needed to develop his own health club last summer. He found an old warehouse in the hospital district, and he fell in love with the large four story building. It was cheaper than he expected due to the shape it was in, but it was also bigger than he’d planned, so he had to do some serious planning. Work has been going on for the last seven months, and it’s finally at a point where he should be able to open Serenity Health Club & Fitness Center in a few weeks. He’s converted half of the fourth floor into a studio apartment and home office for himself, so he will be living on premises, and he’s going to be working his ass off to make sure the place does well. Not only to repay his loans, but because he wants people to be happy and to have long, healthy lives.
