A/N: The second of the short stories I wrote on my trip. And, I couldn't remember for sure, but I think you could still go wait for someone by the gate in 1998. I restructured my archive a bit: http://aerial312.googlepages.com

Josh stepped into the airport terminal, and there was Donna, standing by the gate

"You didn't have to come inside."

"Security kept telling me that I couldn't keep the car waiting in the loading zone."

"Where'd you park?"

"Short term parking."

"God, that was longest I've sat on a plane in my life."

"Somehow I doubt that."

"To stay in the same country, certainly."

"Why were you so late?"

"We sat in line for the runway for an hour. There were twenty planes in front of us."

"Aww."

"I can't sit still that long."

"I've noticed."

"How long have you been here?"

"At the airport?"

"Yeah."

"Two hours."

"Sorry."

"I shouldn't have been early."

"Planes are never early."

"I was just so worried about traffic and making it here on time."

"Ugh, I forgot about LA traffic."

"I've never seen anything like it."

"Nothing like this in downtown Madison?" he smirked.

"Not even close."

"DC's bad. LA's in a league all of it's own."

"It took us 5 hours to get here from San Diego yesterday in the bus. 5 hours! Sam said it should take two, two and a half."

"Under rare, optimal conditions."

"Apparently."

They made their way down to the baggage carousel.

"Where I the rest of the campaign today?"

"The Governor has meet and greets and stuff all over the city. We're to go back to the hotel and I have to prep you for the fundraiser tonight."

"Ugh."

"It's small. And exclusive."

"I hate these."

"I know."

"Where is it?"

"At the home of Gregory Almanson."

"Where?"

"Beverly Hills."

"Of course."

Josh leaned against he wall and closed his eyes while they waited for the carousel to start up. Donna stood in front of him, scrutinizing him closely.

"How are you doing?"

"I just sat on a plane for 7 hours."

"You know what I meant."

"I…" he shrugged. "I don't know."

She nodded.

"It hasn't fully sunk in, I don't think."

"No?"

"It was just weird, being back there, without him, but with all these people there. I didn't have any time to myself to really think."

"You want the time to brood?"

"I…that's how deal with stuff."

"Well, you can brood for an hour in the car while I drive back to the hotel," she smiled softly.

"Ugh…" he chuckled. "An hour?"

"It takes an hour to get anywhere in LA."

The baggage started coming out, and they quickly found his bag and headed for the car.

"At least my bag made the flight. That would have just been the cap to an awful morning."

"Aww," Donna smiled, patting his arm. "Your day is starting to look up."

He caught her hand in his. "Yeah…"

She squeezed his hand, and pulled him to the car.

"They let you rent a car?"

"It's one of the ones the campaign has for errands."

"But you get to drive it?"

"Yeah. Why?"

"I thought you had to be 25."

"I'm-"

"Going to be 25 in November."

"Sam said it was all set."

"Yeah?"

"He knows I'm not 25 yet."

"I thought you didn't advertise that."

"I don't. Sam asked me point blank."

"So he could get the younger driver thing added to the contract."

"I guess."

"Get in."

"I'm driving."

"Let me."

"Nope. You're exhausted."

"I can drive-"

"Get in the car."

Josh chuckled, and tossed his suitcase in the backseat, then took his place in the passenger seat.

"Has Sam been reading through that stuff I had faxed over?"

Donna nodded, carefully studying the signs that would lead her out of the maze of LAX. "He read it on the bus from San Diego yesterday. He has a few questions for you."

"Why didn't he call me?"

"By the time we got here, and he told me, it was like 4 am in Connecticut."

"I just want to get this will stuff over."

"It will be soon."

"I want it to go as smoothly as possible, so my mom doesn't have to think about it."

"How's she doing?"

"Holding it together. She's had a steady stream of friends coming by."

"That must have been nice."

"For her."

"Right. You didn't get your time to brood."

"It's just weird. All these old neighbors I haven't seen in 20 years. It was really awkward, you know?"

Donna nodded. Josh turned to stare out the window. They drove in silence for a while.

"Don't you want to get on the highway?"

"No."

"405…that's the main-"

"It's a parking lot."

"Yeah?"

"It's rush hour. We're not getting anywhere near the 405."

"Where then?"

"Sam gave me directions. I take La Cienega for a long time…here it is." She got in the turn lane.

"And then?"

"And then is still some time away."

Josh sighed.

"I take it to Santa Monica Boulevard. I know what I'm doing. I had two hours in the airport to study these directions."

Donna held up a napkin, covering Sam's elegant handwriting, and some questionable, hand-drawn maps.

"A napkin?"

"He drew it at the bar last night."

"I thought you guys didn't get in till like 1?"

"And after that long drive…"

"The bar. Right."

Donna smiled.

"You don't get to go tonight, do you?"

Donna shook her head. "You, Leo, CJ, Sam and Toby, and of course the Governor."

"Ugh…"

"But we do have an hour before the rest of the campaign gets here, so I get to bring you up to date on the guys at the fundraiser. I was thinking we could do that in the pool."

"I love how you just throw that in there."

"It would make it more fun…"

"You have a bathing suit with you?"

"No, but Margaret lent me one in San Diego. We had fun in the pool during a fundraiser we couldn't go to down there."

"Why don't you just wait till later to swim?"

"Cause this pool's outside."

"It's warm."

"Not at night."

"Do I even want to ask why Margaret not only has a bathing suit with her, but more than one?"

"CJ has one too. And Sam."

"Really?"

"In fact, I got him to lend it to the cause-"

"The cause?"

"The get-Josh-caught-up-on-things-in-the-pool cause."

"I see."

"Come on, it'll be fun."

"We've still got quite a drive."

"And by the end you'll be all hot-"

"Hot, huh?" he smirked.

"You know what I meant."

"So you're taking me on a long, circuitous way back-"

"Which moves faster than the 405-"

"In the hopes of getting me all hot and bothered?"

"Josh…" she laughed, turning bright red.

"I suppose you can brief me in the pool."

"I knew you'd come around."
