American Idol recently announced a ground-breaking special called “Idol Gives Back.” It is going to air between two nights on Tuesday, April 24 and Wednesday, April 25. In a press release issued by FOX, they said the special is about “raising awareness and funds for organizations that provide relief programs to help children and young people in extreme poverty in America and Africa.” They have gathered together all different artists from various genres including Josh Groban, Pink, Michael Buble, Annie Lennox, Il Divo, and my favorite Gwen Stefani.
American Idol is a phenomenon unlike America has ever seen. According to statistics released last year, more people voted in the season finale to see who was going to be crowned the American Idol than voted for the President of the United States. Disturbing on so many levels! I think it is a cool though to think that over 30 million people come together twice a week for one common experience. It doesn’t matter what race or gender or social class you are. It is all about the music and who ultimately is the best singer (sometimes.) This “Idol Gives Back” special is important because it is going to bring much needed awareness to millions of homes. FOX promises that “for every vote cast, American Idol sponsors Coca-Cola and AT&T, along with a range of additional partners, will donate money to the charity.”
I will be watching and I hope so are you. Vote American Idol!
