Tyra Banks is a force to be reckoned with. My fascination with her began quite a few years ago with her hit reality TV show, “America’s Next Top Model.” The show was a relatively new concept where girls competed in a variety of challenges to prove who would make it to the top. The prize included the coveted role as a Cover Girl spokesperson and a modeling contract worth thousands. Tyra made households names of her fellow judges and catchphrases such as “Want to be on top?” and “Who will continue on to becoming America’s Next Top Model?”
Tyra exuded confidence and sex as she proved to the world why she was one of the world’s greatest supermodels. She poses and struts her stuff with such ease, that everyone is forced to watch with envy. Now six seasons later, “America’s Next Top Model” is still a hugely popular show.
Now she is also host of her own daytime talk show, “The Tyra Show.” Tyra’s show focuses on real people and problems we all face daily whether it is bad hair days or more serious topics like low self-esteem. Every night at 11 PM, I make sure to catch the re-runs of her show on the Oxygen Network. She empowers me like no other person has before. I can watch “America’s Next Top Model” and love her over the top persona and big hair. She is a drag queen in every sense of the word. Then on her talk show she is real and relatable.
Recently, there was much controversy over paparazzi shots of her in a bikini. She came out on the cover of People Magazine and responded to all the criticism. She stood up for everyone who has ever felt overweight and slammed critics who called her “fat.” How can a beautiful black woman who stands tall at 5’10” and weighs 160 pounds be fat? On her show she wore that infamous bathing suit and criticized the media for its portrayal of her. She expressed her concerns over young girls who look up to her and all the recent models who have been dying of anorexia. Tyra says “I get so much mail from young girls who say, 'I look up to you, you're not as skinny as everyone else, I think you're beautiful. So when they say that my body is 'ugly' and 'disgusting,' what does that make those girls feel like?”
Tyra Banks never ceases to amaze me. She is a role-model for my life for everything she stands for. She adores the gay culture and stands up for what she believes in. Catch “America’s Next Top Model” or the “The Tyra Show” and you will know exactly what I am talking about. I love Tyra Banks… SO WHAT!
