Big Idea

There is a show on cable called "The Big Idea." I can't be certain of which cable news channel it is aired. No matter.

Here is my 'Big Idea:'

Open a single hardware store named, "Small Town Hardware."

Since the closing of my high school employer, Damman Hardware, there has been an unfamiliar and unfriendly emptiness of the low-scale hardware store. By low-scale I am referring to non-Home Depot/Lowe's establishments.

I have heard complaints from people in the metro area that there are too few small, everyday hardware stores. I have the feeling this sentiment is growing throughout the nation as mega-stores such as Home Depot and Lowe's have become the primary hardware and home improvement locations.

People do not always want to drive the extra few miles to scavenger hunt through a mall of a store for just a few items, fail to find a friendly knowledgeable salesperson, and wait in the check-out line for up to ten minutes before being prompted of a store credit card. I believe I can ease such anxieties for the everyday Bob Villa AND weekend Tim Allen.

Here are the sections the store will provide:
-Hardware (nuts/bolts, hinges, etc.)
-Tools (drills, toolboxes, etc.)
-Auto (a small section of basic needs for upkeep)
-Plumbing (everyday supplies for professional plumbers; putty, PVC and other piping/tubing, toilet/sink fixtures, but NOT actual toilets, tiles, or major fixtures.)
-Electrical (basic everyday supplies for professional electricians, light bulbs, but NOT light fixtures or appliances.)
-Housewares (A small section which will include shelving, home storage units, and basic kitchen needs)
-Yard (grills, fertilizer, lawn mower parts/equipment, top soil, yard tools, and garden seeds.)
-Office (another small section to include basic stationary needs, writing utensils, and basic frames.)

Atmosphere:
-Easy small town atmosphere.
-Country music.
-TV's near checkout playing sports during workday and NASCAR or home improvement shows during weekend.
-Rustic, but clean feel.
-Employees to wear work boots, jeans, t-shirt (optional flannel), and cap. May wear appropriate NASCAR memorabilia on Sundays and local baseball/basketball/hockey jerseys on special occasions

That is all I have right now.

I have never taken a business class. I have no idea how much money it would cost. I have no idea how new retails are currently profiting.

That is my big idea. And who knows...maybe in 5 years or so it will become my reality and success.
