*g* Very carefully and with much skill? (And a lot of "coaching" from Lex...? *coughs*) But, uh, in actuality really very poorly (pats Clark on the head). Ah, well -- better luck next time! (sorry, couldn't resist! *eg*) ...As to the 'how' of the choice, Clark informs me it eventually came down to a coin toss. (Lex is silent on the issue of whether it was rigged somehow, though Clark's glare says it all, I think. *g*) Pretty sure the -real- argument came later ;)
Oh, sorry about that -- that was supposed to be the ("new") present! (fixed it ^_^) Clark's pretty ineffective at making Lex stay still long enough that a rescue might materialize, unfortunately, and we all know that neither of them are very good at standing by and depending on others to help them out ;) Clark didn't really have a say in the jumps since Lex was the one who knew the magic better between the two of them (...for various nonstandard values of "better" *g*) and of course Lex would be sure he'd get it right (back to their time) on every next try... ;)
