i just got done watching the maltese falcon.
[first time]
pretty sweet movie, if you ask me.
gotta love the old-style crime movie.
and the cinematography was solid--lots of really cool shots, for sure.
i can't believe i hadn't watched it before.
well, better late than never.
that leaves only ghengis blues and house of sand and fog left from my netflix escapades.
[in all honesty, i passed out just after finishing the movie and didn't update because i was asleep.]
this weekend was alright--
played some solid billiards friday night at the warehouse.
and i found $20 on the floor there, so it was a +$3 night (even with 3 hrs of pool and buying a pitcher of harp), which is always nice!
saturday was good, too, i went and picked up the crossbars for my roof rack (attached it this afternoon in the fucking sun, damn). i can now put shit up there.
150 lbs worth of shit.
i met up with people from work in the afternoon to drive down to the wakulla river for a solid afternoon of canoing.
we saw many creatures, including (but not limited to):
manatees (3)
gators (2)
bard owl
ospreys (2)
turtles (ass tons)
rednecks (again, ass tons)
lilies (lots of really pretty ones in bloom)
and a bunch of other shit.
some pictures:
yeah, my love for the power lines is evident in that last one.
they just cut through things.
ruining the mystique, but somehow adding to it as well.
i don't know, it's a strong fascination, though.
god i love being outside.
nature is cool!
and any nature is better than the farm where i do my field work.
no offense to farmers, but i just hate it when the weekend rolls around and i don't want to go outside 'cause i've been outside all day everyday at work, but it's just at an old field/farm site.
bah to that.
after canoing, we went out for indian food (good, not great, but solid) and then went to a lounge with live jazz (just piano and sax) for an hour or so.
the group then dwindled and john (my replacement) and amanda (an undergrad here for the summer) and i went to this restaurant/club where they were having latin dancing lessons and then latin dancing.
we missed the lessons, so we just danced.
not well, though.
i mean, amanda and i have rhythm ok enough and could improvise based on what other people were doing.
john wasn't as good at that, but he was into it, so it's all good.
we also ended up talking to these 4 mexican dudes outside for a while.
they were pretty nice.
john's into meeting people, so just struck up a conversation with them.
sunday was, well, sunday.
same olds, for the most part.
i spent a lot of this weekend working on a paper, also.
i'm actually now second author (the plan had originally been for me to be lead author, but that got scrapped when the guy who was going to help me got too crunched on time, so he took the lead. i'm not too upset, a little bit, but it's a good paper, and second author is pretty solid.), so i wasn't writing it, but reading/commenting/editing.
it's kinda nice to be on that end of it.
and i've been picking up on stuff about writing, even without writing it myself, so i feel like i'm getting a lot from the experience.
it's on the stuff i did two summers ago (really? has it been that long already???) when i was in michigan.
host parasite ecology is cool shit.
hopefully it'll get in a good journal (it certainly should). it'll nice to finally get published.
goddamn my thesis is still sitting on carol's desk waiting for comments.
bah.
she's busy, i understand, but it sucks waiting and waiting and not hearing back.
the other main development from last week was that i went to the podiatrist and we decided that it would be best (given my current situation with moving and insurance ending, etc etc) for him to remove the fibroma from my foot.
it's gonna happen next thursday (28th).
i'll be off my feet for the weekend and back at work on monday.
so not too bad.
but i'm not that bummed about missing a little work.
well, i'll be missing other days of work over the next 6 weeks (shit! that's it????) with the trip to ithaca this week and the wedding in a few weeks.
it's nice that we could schedule in the surgery with the proper amount of time for the two check-backs (for redressing and then stitch-removal).
speaking of ithaca, i'm heading up there on wednesday.
crazy!
hopefully i can find a good place for roberto and myself.
i think we'll be good.
i've got 3 appointments already set-up (a total of 6 places in those appointments), and will try and set-up a few more before then. but supposedly there are still for rent signs up through town, so i'm gonna peruse, as well.
the nice thing is, no need to rent a car.
i'll be getting around on borrowed bikes, public transport, and my feet.
yeah for saving money.
and yeah for nice people (becky and brian)who offer house for crashing and bike for riding.
hence why i bought them a gift (some good ol' southern tupelo honey).
i've got some preparings still to do, though, for meeting with nelson (advisor-to-be).
but it's not like a really formal meeting, just talking about what i should plan on doing first semester, since he'll be gone.
and then i'll have a good chunk of the weekend to enjoy ithaca in the summer.
it's supposed to be pretty awesome.
live music/hiking/markets/etc.
i'll take pictures.
ok.
enough pretending.
time to do monday things.
