My job can be challenging at times, and the pay is disappointing, but there are a few things I really dig about it.
1. The people... Everyone at work is willing to chip in to make sure we get out of the store at a reasonable time. They're also friendly and an interesting slice of society. The store manager is probably one of my favorite managers so far. It's also the first place I've worked were I got invited to join a store fantasy football league.
2. Lifting things... Since starting last November I've gotten much stronger than I usually am. You have to be strong to carry bikes across a store the size of a supermarket, or to load cribs into people's cars. For the first time in years, I have decent definition of my biceps. I've also lost a little bit of weight from all the walking.
3. Alone time... When the store isn't that busy, I have sections of time where I can think about whatever while I straighten my section or put back re-shop.
4. Somewhat Flexible Hours... I've gotten every day off I've ever asked for, and they've been willing to work around band practice and cub scout meetings. Part of the reason my job prospects are limited is because I can only work nights and weekends (unless I were to get paid enough) and it's nice to have a place that works around that.
5. Discount/Clearance... I've been able to get most of the kids' (all three of them) Christmas shopping done on the cheap through savvy clearance shopping and using my discount.
