Summary: Castiel has been the giant media star Misha Collins for years now - but he decides to leave it all to become a normal teenager. He soon falls in love with his new best friend Dean Winchester and soon after they get together - problems arise. Can Castiel stay out of the limelight? Or will being Misha force him to forever be on stage.
Notes: media star is obvious inspired by the japanese 'idol'.
“Did you hear?! Misha quit!”
“You mean like, mega ultra idol Misha quit?!”
“Didn’t he just get a lead role in a movie?!”
“But his new single was coming out soon!”
“I heard he had a mental breakdown! And that’s why he quit!”
“Nuh uh! I heard it was because some girl shattered his heart!”
“Wasn’t he dating that singer Anna?!”
“I hated Anna! Misha’s so beautiful and gorgeous! I wanted him all to myself!”
“Oh man! I can’t believe he just left all that stardom behind! Didn’t he have like a public appearance
tour coming up?!”
“I heard it’s just a hiatus! A small break! He did raise to fame incredibly fast! He’s all over tv, in tv shows and commercials and in all of the advertisements and magazines! His face is everywhere!”
Castiel sighed.
He was currently standing on the edge of the stage, just behind the curtains, peering at the giant crowd of media reporters just waiting to eat him alive at this press conference. Castiel took a deep breath. He looked back and he saw Michael, his manager and his older brother, glaring at him “I hope for your sake that you don’t regret this! You’re at the height of your career and now you’re going to blow it!”
Castiel sighed again “I’ve been at this since I was 13, Michael. I’m 17 now and I’m tired. I just want to have some time to rest, that’s all.” Michael hissed “People forget easily! They will forget you! And someone like… Raphaëlle! Someone like Raphaëlle will replace you!”
Before Castiel could say anything, the red light came on and Castiel smiled brightly, turned on his Misha persona and made his way to his seat, hearing countless voices screaming out questions. He made his way to his seat at the press table, Michael sitting beside him. Whispering harshly “Watch what you say.” Castiel sighed, rolling his eyes, whispering back “Don’t I always?” Then he smiled brightly, leaning towards the microphone as he raised his hand “Hello everybody! Thank you so much for coming here today!”
The members of the media started asking thousands of questions at once, Castiel was used to this though. “PLEASE! Let Misha give his statement first! Then questions!” The crowd drew quiet, holding up their own microphones to record what Castiel was about to say. Castiel gave the crowd a soft smile. “Let’s get started, shall we? I’m merely going to be going on hiatus so I can get a bit of rest, that’s all! I’m a-okay though! Just tired!” then he grinned. The media started up again. Michael barked “One question at a time!” Then Michael pointed to one reporter “You! Go first!”
“So, all rumours of heartbreak or mental breakdown are false?”
Castiel nodded “Yeah, I didn’t have a breakdown or anything, and Anna and I ended things on a really good note, so don’t worry about me, everyone! It’s just to get a little rest! I have been at this go-go-go for years now! It’s like a small vacation!”
“When will you be back?”
Castiel paused, oddly taken back by the question. When will he be back? He grinned “Soon! I don’t have a definite date!”
“Where will you go?!”
Castiel groaned inwardly, he was hoping this question wouldn’t come up. But they had decided that it was best that he was honest instead of the media going on a manhunt. “I’ll be staying with my older brother Gabriel, in Lawrence, Kansas. He’s a teacher there.”
“HERE?! HE’S COMING HERE?!” Sam gasped loudly, gawking at the screen, his back facing the table as he straddled the chair, ignoring his supper. Dean blinked, looking up from his supper, mildly interested at his 14 year old brother. John groaned, as he read the paper. Sam had begged them to please let them watch the press conference during supper instead of the news. John and Dean weren’t too pleased with the idea, but they indulged Sam who was a big fan of this ‘Misha’ guy. Sam turned his head, staring at John “Did you know he was coming?!” John nodded, taking a sip of his beer. “I’m chief of police, of course I knew he was coming here. I had to double the patrols around the guy’s place to make sure no crazy fan goes after him. This is such a hassle. ”
“No kidding” agreed Dean, taking another bite “Now the town is going to be filled with crazy press people trying to get a picture of the dude.” John nodded, making a sound of agreement “Your school is going to be hell too.” Dean blinked, eyes wide as his mouth dropped “My school?! Why would my school be nuts?!” John folded the paper, putting it down. “This is confidential, but he’s going to be attending your school.” Sam made a thrilled sound, turning around to face the table. “Really?! He’s going to our school?!” John nodded again “Yeah, as a senior, so he’ll probably be in your classes, Dean.” Dean’s eyes twitched as he frowned “Why my school and not some snooty private school?!” “His brother is a teacher at your school.” Sam was beaming “Oh my god! No way! Which one?! Oh man! Mr.Novak is going to FLIP! You told me that he’s such a huge fan of Misha!” John snorted “Makes sense, that’s his brother.” “WHAT?!” cried out both Sam and Dean. “Misha is Mr. Novak’s- “
“-is my little brother!”
Gabriel smiled brightly, his arm around Castiel, who looked nervous as hell. “But, here he’s Castiel Novak, okay? Misha is his stage name! So, be nice to my little brother, okay?” The whole class had stars in their eyes as they looked at Castiel in complete and total awe. Dean could not give less of a shit. He had a frown on his face as he leaned on his hand. He couldn’t believe this goddamn spectacle. He couldn’t get his usual parking spot because a bunch of news crew people and shit had taken all the spots, so he had to walk three blocks from the school - which made him late. So now he has detention. Because of this stupid kid! Dean eyed him. He didn’t look like how he was on tv. He still had his smooth pale skin, but he seemed less sure of himself, less confident and attention seeking. Also, for a guy who usually dressed at the top of fashion trends (or even making his own), he was dressed pretty nerdy in a pair of jeans, a dress shirt and a blue sweater vest and a pair of old sneakers. But Dean had to admit though, the guy was gorgeous. He had messy black hair that looked like he had either just rolled out of bed or had a very nice time in the janitor’s closet and the bluest eyes he had ever seen. And so very pink lips, and beautifully shaped eyes, and a nice lean sturdy body, perfect for bend- WHOAH!
Dean’s eyes shot open shocked at his own train of thought. No! No gay thoughts! Go away gay thoughts! He groaned, shaking his head. He couldn’t deal with this. He was straight! Perfectly straight! Then he looked back up, saw the guy again and groaned. He was not straight. He should just avoid the guy forever
“Castiel! You can sit besides Dean! He’s the guy with the pissy look on his face with the short brown hair.” Dean then proceeds to look up and glare at Gabriel. The guy was lucky that he was his favourite teacher. Castiel nodded, making his way to his seat, which was near the wall and plunking down with a loud sigh. Dean’s eyes narrowed, checking the boy out again. Okay. If nobody knows what he’s thinking? Maybe he’ll be safe. He should be safe. God this guy was so much hotter like this. Some kinky librarian thing going for him. Castiel blinked, noticing that Dean was looking at him over and turned to meet his gaze.
Dean felt electricity run through him.
Castiel must have felt the same since his eyes widen and his mouth dropped in an ‘o’ shape. But no. There’s no way! This guy was dating the super hot singer Anna Milton just a little while ago, there’s no chance, there’s no way!
Class went pretty much without a hitch, people kept staring at Castiel, or trying to. Castiel figured out that Dean was a good shield and proceed to try and hide behind him pretty often. Dean let him, rounding himself up to take up more space. When he looked to the side to see if it was working, he was greeted with Castiel smiling relieved, mouthing a ‘thank you’. Gabriel raised a brow. What was this?
When the bell rung, Gabriel walked up to the pair, putting his hand down on Dean’s desk and gesturing to Castiel to stop for a moment.“Heeey Dean-no! Can I ask a small favour of you?” Dean blinked “…uh…what?” Gabriel grinned “So, I checked, and you and Castiel pretty much have the same schedule, minus auto shop, so I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind showing Castiel around to his classes?” Dean blinked surprised as he gawked at Castiel “You took wood shop?!” Castiel nodded “Yes, I enjoy making things. I always wanted to know how to work with wood.” Gabriel grinned “C’mon! It’d be perfect! You’re the only person not going gaga over him, and you’re also really good at getting people to go away! Also, contrary to the opinion of many, I know for a fact that you’re actually a really great guy. Please?” Dean sighed “Yeah, it’s fine.” Gabriel grinned “Perfect!”
Castiel and Dean left the classroom together. The minute he did, a crowd of girls jumped on them. Dean growled, causing the girls to jump away. Castiel blinked, surprised. Then Dean put his arm around Castiel, leading him towards their next class. “Thank you.” whispered Castiel softly, but just loud enough for Dean to hear it. Dean snorted, taking his arm away “Don’t sweat it; I can imagine it gets annoying.” Castiel sighed sadly “You have no idea.”
They walked into their next class, Castiel sitting besides Dean without a second thought. The sun was rising to it’s peak, making Castiel, who was sitting by the window gasp softly. The sun was making Dean almost glow. Castiel could feel his heart pounding in his chest. Oh no! Dean was beautiful, a perfect Adonis. No work, no makeup - nothing. And yet, he was the most attractive man Castiel had ever seen. This was actually one of the major reasons he wanted to leave show business. He realised early on what he really desired in a relationship - a man. Since he was so in the public eye, he was completely unable to date a man if he wanted to, without the entire world knowing. And even though, there was now many and many stars coming out - it could ruin your career and Castiel didn’t want to put himself in that position. Not at 17. Dating Anna had been a cover. She was a really good friend of his, both of them starting in the business about the same time. She was his closest friend and when he told her the truth - she devised a cover for him. So - they had ‘dated’ for a couple of years, pretending to be really private about their relationship. The reason they ‘broke up’ was because Anna was falling for someone else and Castiel didn’t want to hold her back. In the end, they had done everything allowed in public except kiss. Anna said that he should reserve his first real kiss (and not stage kiss) so a ‘really hot dude that gets you going real proper’!
Anna was in a class of her own.
Which was ironic considering how she was known for her purity and ‘good girl’ image but Castiel wouldn’t change her for the world. He sighed. He actually kinda really missed Anna now. Castiel was lost in his thoughts until a slip of paper landed on his desk. The handwriting was messy and rushed, but the message was clear
‘Are you okay? You seem really down - Dean’
Castiel blinked and looked to the side, where Dean was eying him from the corner of his eye as he took notes. Castiel smiled softly to himself, scribbling back.
‘I’m fine, just thinking about someone I miss’
Dean took the note from Castiel’s desk, reading it over and nodding. He looked at Cas, holding up a thumbs up, making an uncertain face. Castiel smiled at him, nodding. Dean smiled back, turning back to his notes. Gabriel was right - Dean really is a great guy! This could be a problem…
When lunchtime came around, the principal Zachariah insisted that Castiel come eat with him in the teacher’s lounge, as in a ‘welcome to our school’ lunch. Castiel looked like he rather jump out the window. Zachariah then proceed to take the time to tell Castiel how Dean was a no-good, a bad influence and a man with no future. It goes without saying that Zachariah was getting his car keyed tonight.
The incident with Zachariah left Dean in a piss poor mood. It was worst when they insisted that Castiel skip out from gym to meet the school board members and Dean’s next class was auto shop - so he didn’t get a chance to see Castiel again. His shop professor, Mr.Singer, who everybody just called ‘Bobby’ (well, Dean did), could easily see that his best student was in a shit mood. It didn’t help that he knew Dean his entire life because him and his dad were really good friends. So while Dean was under a 1988 Oldsmobile, looking her over, Bobby walked up to the student and the car, sitting down on a crate. The beauty of auto class is that there was few students, and the class was pretty big. “So, what’s bugging ya, Dean?” Dean paused for a moment, undoing a clog “…New student.” Bobby blinked, a little surprised “Wouldn’t have pegged ya for a Misha fan. I thought Sam was?” A loud sigh was heard from under the car “Sam is. Just, I met the guy, he’s…I don’t know, he’s really nice. And cool. And…stuff.” Bobby grunted “Boy, come out from under there.” Dean instantly rolled out, looking up at Bobby as he sat down. “Are you telling me that you’re…interested in this kid?” Dean bit his lip. Bobby was the only person who knew. Then Dean nodded. There was a pause, and then Bobby groaned “You idjit. He’s like some big time celebrity, are you nuts?” Dean whined, rolling back under the car “Trust me. I know. Can’t even eat freaking lunch with him and according to Zachariah, I’m a no-good, piece of crap with no future.” Bobby grunted “Did I mention I hate that prick?” “Many times” Bobby shook his head “Listen to me boy, you’re a great kid and you have a great future ahead of you and have every right to be happy. Don’t let some dickwad tell you squat!” Dean was smiling. Even though Bobby couldn’t see it - he knew he was.
Later when Dean walked out of detention, on his way to grab Sammy, he blinked, hearing a whimper coming from the hallways to the side. Dean walked down the corridor, finding someone curled up on themselves, hiding their face in his knees. Dean walked up to the mass, crouching down “Hey…Are you okay, dude?” The person lifted their head, showing a very horrified Castiel. Dean blinked, putting his hand on the other’s arm “Hey..Hey…are you okay?” Castiel shook his head “There’s…There’s so many out there!” Dean blinked “So many what?” Then someone rounded the corner quickly, causing Castiel to ‘eep’ and hide his face once more. Dean blinked, it was Ash. Ash who always had a mullet and good times in his eyes “Dean! Did you see outside?! It’s super intense! It’s a giant media circus! Reporters as far as we can see!” Dean’s jaw dropped. That was it! “Crazy man” Ash grinned “Time to go get myself a tv spot, see you later!” and then Ash ran off.
Dean waited a moment, and then turned to Castiel, who raised his head again.”…There’s too many reporters?” offered Dean, Castiel nodded. Dean blinked “But…you were always in the spotlight!” Castiel sighed “With Michael. I was never without Michael. It was easy with the Misha persona. But…Castiel just isn’t too great with too much attention. And Gabriel is stuck here until really late due to special meetings so I can’t go home.” admitted Castiel, frustrated. Dean paused for a moment, and then he spoke again “Want to take the back way? Sneak out?” Castiel’s eyes widen “There’s a back way?!” Dean grinned brightly “You damn right there is! C’mon! I just have to grab Sam and we’ll go!” Dean then got up, offering his hand for support. Castiel quickly took it.
Dean led Castiel in through the small corridor behind the gym. He then played with the lock on the equipment shed, jangled it a bit and it soon opened. Dean flashed Castiel a grin and led him thought the shed, still holding Castiel’s hand. Castiel was holding himself with his free hand, closely following the Winchester. “Thank you.” said Castiel, barely above a whisper. Dean merely flashed him a smile. “Ah, no worries. You just can’t tell people about this path, okay?” Castiel smiled a bit at Dean, a small warm smile, nodding. “I won’t.” Dean really hoped that Castiel couldn’t see how red his face was.
They quickly reached the back door. Dean opened it slowly, sticking his head out, and grinned brightly “Coast is clear! C’mon! Let’s run for it!” They ran to the fence, Castiel’s eyes wide and bright as relief rushed over him. They quickly scaled the fence (Dean helped Castiel), and then were soon on their way to Sam’s middle school. “So... “ started Dean, looking a bit to the side as he rubbed his neck. Castiel blinked, looking straight at Dean “Yes Dean?” Dean chuckled nervously “Sorry, I just, so...how are you holding up?” Castiel flashed Dean another of his small smiled “Well, it’s...it’s been frustrating. I think I’m going to be in everybody’s facebook profile picture with the amount of time I got asked to take a picture with someone, today alone, which included the principal, which was rather awkward.” Dean made a dry heave “Oh god, you need to shower in bleach tonight.” Castiel started to laugh softly, which made Dean’s heart rate pick up. Oh man, this was getting bad. “Well, I promise you that I will not ask for a photo. Unless it’s like, because we’re hanging out and it’s for memories sake or something.” Castiel blinked, surprised “You want us to hang out?” Crap. Thought Dean, he had jumped the gun. Of course a big name celebrity like Castiel doesn’t want to hang out “You know...if you want to, that is. If not, I won’t get offended or anything...” trailed off Dean, trying not to look like a total loser. The answer he got was Castiel smiling brightly “I’d LOVE to hang out! When do you want to hang out?” Dean blinked, surprised, then he smiled brightly. “Umm, after we pick up Sammy? We like to hang out by the river. Sammy’s really cool, a big nerd, but still really cool.” Castiel nodded, still smiling “Okay! I’ve never hung out just by a river before! Who’s Sammy anyways? A friend?” Dean chuckled softly “Naw, he’s my little brother. I pick him up after school so he doesn’t have to walk home alone.” Castiel smiled warmly “You’re a very good man, Dean.” Dean turned red, rubbing the back of his neck “Aww man, it’s nothing like that. Since mom died when we were kids, and my dad working all the time, someone had to take care of Sammy, you know?” Castiel did a small curt nod “Yes, same here. My parents died in a car accident when I was 8, so Michael has been raising me ever since. Well, him and my other brothers, that is. But you take care of Sam, my big brother just threw me into show biz as soon as he could.” Dean nodded “It’s kinda rough, huh?” Castiel smiled sadly “You have no idea.”
They continued walking down the street, walking in step easily as they talked about anything. The movies they liked, the music they prefered (Castiel’s answers surprised Dean), and so fourth. Dean was surprised to find out that he and Castiel actually had a lot in common. They continued walking until they reached Sam’s middle school, standing to the side, waiting for the younger Winchester to come out.
“...How come you’re holding hands with another dude, Dean?”
Dean blinked; confused by the question, then he looked down. Castiel and him were both still holding hands from before! He coughed, letting go of the hand and pretending not to notice the hurt look that flashed on Castiel’s face. There’s no freaking way.
Then Sam’s jaw dropped as his eyes almost bulged out “Is…is that…is that-“ Dean quickly clamped a hand over Sam’s mouth. “It is” he hissed, slow and quiet “But I’ll explain everything once we’re at the river, okay?” Sam nodded and Dean removed his hand. “Let’s go, shall we? Before anybody else notice our companion.” Castiel looked guilty at that moment before Dean threw his arm around his shoulder “And Cas here is excited to hang out by the river, aren’t ya?” Castiel smiled “I really am”
“So…how come you left showbiz, Castiel?” asked Sam, still getting used to not calling him Misha. They had been at the river for a few hours now “Like I said in the press conference, I was tired. It was like playing a role every single day of your life, I just wanted to be myself for a bit” Sam bit his lip “So…Misha’s all fake?” Dean grunted, not liking where the conversation was going. Dean was currently laying on the ground near the riverbed while Castiel and Sam sat beside Dean. “Well, he is a part of who I am, but much more flamboyant than me. He’s a lot more outgoing than me.” Sam nodded, then he smiled “I like Castiel” Castiel smiled “And I like you two.” Dean couldn’t help the butterflies in his stomach.
Then they heard a phone go off.
Castiel quickly excused himself as he answered his phone
“Hey! Where are you?”
“I’m by the river, hanging out with Sam and Dean”
There was a pause until a small chuckle erupted “Oh yeah? Already hanging out with friends, huh? Alright, well, let me know when you’re coming home, okay? I’ll come pick you up”
Castiel smiled as he looked at the brothers that were trying to appear as if they’re not trying to listen in “Will do.”
“I put you in good hands, huh?”
Castiel could feel his stomach jumping up and down, butterflies going crazy as his view centered on Dean.
“I sure think so.”
