Last night a volunteer from a local accompaniment organization came to give a presentation. He's a swiss dude, who appears to work as some sort of journalist. His position here: he accompanies Palestinian children to their school in the city of Hebron. Why does he accompany them, you ask? Because these kids are targets of Israeli settler violence. Yes, small school-aged children who recieve rocks being thrown at them, excrement, garbage and all sorts of other things - no their way to school. So this guy walks with them, acts as a deterrent and a witness to the violence and writes daily reports. He's not allowed to stop physically any aggression. He spends time with other members of the Palestinian community in the area and works to get the message out that the people are being treated like animals.
I, and others here, thought it was exceptionally appropriate that this presentation be given to pilgrims here to the Holy Land. The point is that so many come here to pray and then leave again, without fully realizing or caring about the people who live a daily existance of subjugation and humiliation. The pilgrims with us now are from Tahiti and they have absolutely no experience with this kind of violence. One woman piped up at the end of the presentation to express her digust at these actions and proclaim that the people who do these things are savages.
I dare anyone with an ounce of humanity in them to come here, see that, and agree that what the government here, and others abroad, does is right.
On Friday, I'm going to take a short tour of Hebron. I hope to experience first hand what the people are living. I briefly thought about changing volunteering positions, if it weren't for the commitment I made here and my own realization that I would likely be emotionally torn apart by such an experience. I hope this guy comes to Canada so he can come and speak at SPU. I would house him and feed him myself if he could come and share his experience with everyone possible.
