“Fairy tales should really be updated.” - Shrek the Musical
Oh come on. We all know fairy tales. They start with “Once upon a time…” and end with “…and they lived happily ever after.”
And so many little girls fall completely under their spell.
Not me.
I never really got them. I mean, there was no happily ever after in my house - not even before September 18, 1979. Mom was always sad or tired. Or else he was there. I was only little. I didn’t know who he was, but I knew he wasn’t my daddy. My daddy would never be caught dead with a Yankees cap.
But the only time I remember hearing my mom laugh was when he was there.
I’ve tried and tried to remember other times… Our family camping trip? I know Mom tried to be happy. But even at 9 I knew she was faking it. Maybe the Christmas when I was 6 and it snowed and Daddy woke me up after midnight mass to go and play? Did she laugh then? And if she did, was it real?
In fairy tales, things work out in the end. No matter how bad they seem. The people who are supposed to be together end up together.
And don’t even get me started on the princess. Let’s see… Either she falls asleep for years and years. She completely gives up whoever she is for some guy. Or she’s totally stupid and takes a poisoned apple from… Ok, so that’s a bad example considering the number of drugged drinks I’ve had in my life.
BUT the princess always gets her guy in the end. Uh... yeah. That's totally happened.
I don’t know about you, but my life sure as hell hasn’t been a fairy tale.
