The Doors--don't listen to their popular, "Light My Fire" bullshit... check out their lesser known songs like The Wasp or even somewhat known like, "People Are Strange". Also you are visual, the imagery in "Moonlight Drive" is pure poetry. And the use of keyboards as a substitute for bass was pretty novel at the time.
The Velvet Underground lead the way for experimental and punk rock.
What exactly are you listening too? I was thinking you would get the basics down.

The Rolling Stones are pretty mediocre. Sure they are fun rock music, but they are fun in the same way that AC/DC is fun to certain people. Not really a lot of substance or complexity in the music.
