Russia Makes Insane Threats to Poland

BreitBart pulls this off the AP from Moscow:

Russia says its response to the further development of a U.S. missile shield in Poland will go beyond diplomacy.

which is a clear threat of the use of military force. Against an American installation in a rather sizable NATO power. To prevent a defensive missile installation (the only thing that the base could do is shoot down ballistic missiles; it has no ability to engage ground targets), on that Power's own soil. ABM is basically glorified air defense.

This begs the question as to just what the Russians plan to do which an ABM installation would prevent. None of the answers bode well for Putin the Poisoner's overall intentions toward Europe.

Rice dismissed blustery comments from Russian leaders who say Warsaw's hosting of 10 U.S. interceptor missiles just 115 miles from Russia's westernmost frontier opens the country up to attack.

... which is another point. 10 ABM's would do little more than very slightly blunt a serious Russian strike anyway, their obvious purpose would be stopping a strike from a weak nuclear Power (such as Iran will be in another year or two). Why are the Russians so adamantly opposed to Europe being able to protect herself from weak nuclear strikes?

What are they intending?

The reason this is "insane," of course, is that if the Russians actually carried out these threats, America and all other NATO Powers would be treaty bound to go to war against Russia. This might or might not mean an atomic war; it would almost certainly mean a general war.

Russia is not currently strong enough to win such a war. Putin must know this, so what game is he playing?

Makes me wish he'd come out of the old Soviet Armed Forces, where they invented the concept of "correlation of forces," rather than the KGB.
