I've been wondering for years when the black Democrats will wake up to how they're being used ...

and incidentally, in 1996 this white Anglo-Saxon evangelical conservative cast his Presidential ballot for Alan Keyes (long before Mr. Keyes swerved to the loony far right). I look at principles, not skin.

See Malcolm X's 'Ballot or the Bullet' speech. If I may selectively quote ..

This government has failed us. Our white liberal friends .. have failed us. We need a self-help philosophy.

In parts the man sounds almost libertarian, if not conservative.

He was still searching for solutions when he was murdered. Nobody can say where he would have ended up, either politically or religiously.

On the other hand, W.E.B. Du Bois was calling for a self-help philosophy half a century before Malcolm X, with the "Talented Tenth" leading the way.

So was Booker T. Washington. And OT but he and DuBois agreed on virtually nothing, and they seem to have had several... highly entertaining discussions on the subject.

In other words, knock-down-drag-outs.

Malcolm X had gotten almost entirely away from the intellectual plantation when the man who Barack Obama's former pastor admires, Louis Farrakhan, sent men to gun him down in cold blood.

This white boy has a lot of respect for Malcolm X. stauros June 2 2008, 16:54:37 UTC
Superb public speaker and very complex man, with "fire in his belly" throughout. From his autobiography, he was like three different people at various times in his life:

1) "Detroit Red", petty criminal and street hustler.

2) "Malcolm X", the in-your-face firebrand everybody remembers.

3) "Malik al-Shabazz", when he mellowed out in later life after his Hadj to Mecca.

I saw the movie Malcolm X recently, and they did a pretty good job of showing the major changes in his life and the three different Malcolms that resulted. Plus, having read his autobiography, I can imagine what Malcolm would have to say against the current "Poor Black Victim"/Welfare Bum/"GANGSTAAA!" black-trash cultures; you think Bill Cosby was fiery with his "Pound Cake" speech...
