Hezbollah's boss of all bosses, Hassan Nasrallah, is angry that Imad Mugniyeh received his long-delayed just deserts in Damascus yesterday.

Hezbollah and its Iranian backers blamed Israel for killing Mughniyeh but Israel denied involvement.

If I were Olmert I would proudly boast of involvement. Then again, if I were Olmert, I never would have done half the cowardly things he's done in his disastrous administration.

The reason to boast is because it happened in Damascus, and it apparently killed an innocent bystander. If Israel ever wants to see an end to the Arab aggressions against her territory, the Arabs have to be put on notice that the war won't be fought far away: that the price of war against Israel might be your father or brother or son getting blown up at home.

Note in particular this statement of Nasrallah's:

In a videotaped eulogy broadcast on a giant screen to thousands attending the south Beirut funeral, Nasrallah said Israel had taken the fight outside the "natural battlefield" of Israel and Lebanon.

"You have crossed the borders," he said. "With this murder, its timing, location and method - Zionists, if you want this kind of open war, let the whole world listen: Let this war be open."

Now, Israel only has herself to blame for lettting the notion of a "natural battlefield," which includes Israel and Lebanon (I bet the Lebanese were real happy to hear this!) but not the countries launching the attacks on Israel and Lebanon.

If the Israelis are wise, they will say: "Ok, fine. Let the war be open," and begin retaliating for attacks on Israel, or on Jews anywhere around the world, with countervalue strikes against the elite neighborhoods -- that means the rich, influential cosmopolitan ones -- of any states which are still supporting anti-Israeli terrorism, most especially Syria. Let's see how supportive the elite of Damascus are of Assad's war when they have to fear coming home to a smoking crater and a few pathetic bloodstained remnants where there once was a family.

Disproportionate retaliation, and against the puppetmasters rather than the puppets. That's the key to an Israeli victory.

But no: instead, Israel lets the war be confined to its "natural battlefield," and accepts the thesis that only Israelis, Lebanese, and Palestinians deserve to suffer.

And of course, the Syrians are just fine with that.
