Review of LeGuin's The Dispossessed

This is an (edited and slightly updated) reprint of a review I posted on Usenet back in 2001 of Ursula K. LeGuin's great novel The Dispossessed, a book which I greatly enjoyed but also found to be greatly flawed. Here are my comments.

You've made some great points. I thought The Dispossessed was insanely well-written, better than The Left Hand of Darkness, but quite frankly some of the ideas she touted were, well, it has been a long time since I read it and you've pretty much pounded down all the taller nails. ;-)

I wonder why so many SF authors, especially left-leaning ones, seem to hate democracy so much.
