We intercepted 200 suicide-bomber vests in a truck crossing into Iraq from Syria.

Many parts of the Middle East are at war with us, but like Mother Russia (back when she was alive and killing) they are engaged in a Cold War... of sorts.

I know.

Unlike the USSR, though, neither Syria nor her big brother the Islamic Republic of Iran have thousands of nuclear ICBM's targeted on our cities. The only thing deterring us from giving Syria a well-deserved shellacking is our mind-bogglingly pusillanimous fear of the "Arab street," as far as I can tell. What we should do about Syria is to tell Israel: "You have a free hand for a year. Make the most of it." and then use our air superiority to strip Basher of his air force.

Israel could scrape Syria off our back in Iraq, like an APC "scratching the back" of a tank with its machine guns. Then, freed of that distraction, we could proceed to beat the crap out of Iran for her even worse provocations.

As for oil, you're largely right. We foolishly slowed our adoption of atomic energy in the 1970's, and we are paying the political price for it. But it's really our own abject and inexplicable timorousness that handicaps us.

People are talking about our army being overextended. Why the heck do they assume that the Iranian army is in good shape? IMO, if pushc came to shove, half of it would collapse and the other half of it would join our drive on Teheran. The Iranian people are no friends of the Islamic Republic, and if we showed some guts and pushed that whole foul regime would topple, and Amenijihad fall into our custody to be fitted for his noose.

It's not the purchase price, it's the upkeep.

Just as in Iraq.

You are assuming that, in order to win, we have to garrison Iran and Syria. Simply toppling the regimes, both of which actively support international terrorism, would constitute a victory, and would improve the situation in Iraq.
