It occurred to me that, in the OWS in NY, we are seeing the rise and fall of a civilization. More than that, we are seeing liberalism in fast-forward.
At first, they had their Socialist Paradise, the exact same thing that Obama and the liberals have been trying to bring about for years. And it seemed every bit as glorious as it seemed.
Then it developed, as socialist paradises always do, into a Communist dictatorship. You've got Finance hoarding money, increased pressure on the people to not let anybody know how bad it is, bureaucracy up the wazoo (what *is* a wazoo?), and an upswing in people trying to take advantage of the controlled government redistribution.
Now the Communist Dictatorship seems to be in the process of falling, and I am seeing signs of post-societal barbarian tribalism. The women set up their own tent and seek to protect it from... whom? Police? New Yorkers? No. Fellow OWS'ers. I hear the homosexuals and transvestites are doing the same. One area encourages free smokes, another forbids drugs. They are turning into little insular tribes, and they are regarding each other with suspicion. It reminds me of the Fall of the Soviet Union and the way we ended up with all these tiny countries that didn't exist on the map when I was in elementary school.
In the course of just two months, we have seen America's future if it goes the way Obama wants it to go... and it seems eerily similar to the way that the Soviet Union rose and fell. The insular tribes forming remind me of when the Roman Empire fell.
We are seeing history repeat itself in a microcosm. At first I berated Mayor Bloomberg for letting it continue. Now I think we'd better thank him for letting the lesson play out for us.
I need to follow this up, by the way, with the following observation.
In Animal Farm, you had Napoleon, who turned the farm decidedly more unfriendly after chasing off the gentle intellectual Snowball. This is a representation of what socialists tend to complain about... "Socialism works fine, it's just that it turns into Communism when a power-seeking lunatic distorts the whole thing!"
However, in OWS, who was Napoleon? Anybody? They seem to have strongly resisted any takeover from any source of power. And yet they still moved from Socialism to Communism to Tribalism. This little microcosm experiment may disprove, for anybody who cares to learn the lesson, the notion that Communism is a violent diversion from Socialism instead of its natural conclusion.
That's a very good insight. The weakness of Socialist society normally leads to the rise of a dictator, but the Occupiers are leaderless and lack the power of violent enforcement of the desires of any would-be dictator, because they are embedded in a larger society which would intervene with police forces if they started to engage in imprisonments or executions. So, instead, they progress directly to the point at which the Socialist sytem actually starts falling. Rampant gangsterism and the fission of society into tribes.
Those tribes would be forming micro-armies, too, if not for the watchful power of the NYPD. You might instead of Russia 1989 be seeing Yugoslavia 1992.
Oh, and note the ranting about "government infiltrators" being responsible for the chaos. Remember how Lenin and Stalin ranted about "spies, saboteurs and wreckers" in the pay of the "capitalists?"
Given the rapidly changing social dynamics occurring within this group, I wouldn't be surprised if there were "infiltrators". Not government ones, but rather anthropologists who were camped among them working on their thesis papers...
