I think that
matociquala, aka Elizabeth Bear, misinterpreted my original remark, because when I (later) explained myself she said she agreed with me. So, while I very much appreciate the expressions of support, I think that I was too hard on her and persuaded others to be too hard on her as well.
I do think that she'd never thought about it the way I put it before, though -- that the Cubans were acting happy and friendly to tourists because they were in desperate straits, and that to some extent tourists were taking advantage of their plight to get cheap adoration and occasionally sex from them.
