Ramadan Riots in Brussels

Sep 20, 2009 09:05

You can find the whole story at http://gatesofvienna.blogspot.com/2009/09/ramadan-riots-in-brussels.html, assembled by Baron Bodissey from a number of Belgian sources, but the gist of it is that, in what is becoming an annual tradition, mobs of Muslims are rampaging through the streets of Brussels and its suburbs, attacking and robbing whomever and breaking or burning whatever they wish to destroy. The police are utterly ineffectual at stopping or even containing these riots, largely because of insane orders on the part of their higher-ups to hold back.

Belgium has made no preparations for these riots even though they have been an annual Ramadan event since 2005, and it has long since been obvious that they have nothing to do with whatever "provocation" the Muslims claim to be reacting against. For instance, no emergency detention facilities have been prepared, so the criminal justice system has no choice but to immediately release any but the worst offenders, nor has martial law been declared, nor the Army called out against the mobs.

In response to this I want to point out that these riots have paralyzed the capital of the European Union, with neither Belgium nor the EU politically able to do anything to stop them. This highlights that the European Union is not, for all its pretensions, a Superpower, a Great Power, or even a Power in any sense of the world. No real country would let itself be victimized this way on an annual basis, particuarly not in an area as vital to itself as its own CAPITAL.

The one silver lining of this very dark cloud is that it shows the entire world that the European Union is not to be taken seriously. Nor Belgium, for that matter -- if I were the Netherlands and France, I would seriously think about arranging a partition!
