So, in a recent conversation with a friend I was musing as to why I always fall for the geek boy in a show; my adored Connor Temple in Primeval, Spencer Reid in Criminal Minds and Ianto Jones in Torchwood.
Yes…Ianto Jones. And yes, that’s what she said; “Ianto? A geek? Surely not. He’s too cool to be a geek.”
So here is my argument as to why Ianto is a big ol’ geek boy.
Firstly, archivist…just another name for geek. Think about it; encyclopaedic knowledge about his chosen subject (and in fact, everything else) and a collection analy guarded and looked after.
Secondly, (and I admit that I can’t remember if this is a canon thing or more of a fanon thing, but it is generally accepted) the boy is a Bond fanboy.
Also he’s insanely intelligent. Now I’m not saying that all intelligent people are geeks, but I do have a theory that the majority of geeks are of above average intelligence. We don’t just get into our fandoms and shows and take them for what they are; no, we question, and probe; we push and demand answers; we theorise to fill in blanks; we discuss - almost endlessly; when we don’t get the answers we need many of them write them ourselves. I think the reason a lot of us get into geekdom and fandom is because everyday life doesn’t offer us enough challenges and so without realising what we are doing we immerse ourselves in other things that make us think and work and keep our minds exercised.
And he kept a robot girlfriend in his basement; an undeniable staple of the boy geek.
