Stephen found Connor working at his station. He stood behind him for a few minutes watching him work. A grin managed to work its way onto his face; the young man was so absorbed in his work that he hadn’t even noticed him standing right there.
He coughed.
Connor started at the unexpected noise behind him but Stephen noticed that he had become a lot better at hiding it; the giveaway was mainly in the startled expression reflected in the monitor opposite him. By the time Connor had turned around it was gone.
Stephen gave him a genuine smile.
“Can you do me a favour Connor?”
Connor rolled his eyes. “Can’t you get your own coffee this time?”
“It’s not that. I found this on the floor. Can you return this to T…Captain Ryan for me?” Stephen held out the ID pass and Connor glanced at it. He considered Stephen with a confused look on his face.
“What is it with you two? First you spend the day hiding, then blackmail, oh, sorry, ask me nicely, to go get you lunch and coffee, then Tom practically pushes me through a wall to find out where you are - by the way, you do not want to know what he was doing to his gun earlier; there’s loving your gun and there is loving your gun - then you give me this and tell me I have to take it to him because for some reason you won’t go yourself. Have you two had an argument or something? Do you want me to talk to Tom for yo… ”
Stephen stepped forward and clamped a hand over Connor’s mouth.
“Don’t even.” he said, his voice laden with menace. Then he paused, his brain finally processing all of Connor’s babble. “Wait, Tom was looking for me? Actually for me? What did he say? Did he seem happy, pleased, angry, what?”
“Hmpmhhph”
“Sorry.”
“Better. You want to know what Tom said about you? Are we really having this conversation? I used to listen to the girls at school talk like this. I didn’t understand it then.”
“Don’t push me Connor.”
Connor paused and met Stephen’s eyes. “If you’d asked me nicely I would have told you. I have work to do.”
Stephen sighed and tipped his head back, eyes closed in frustration at himself, as Connor swivelled back around on his chair and resumed his tapping on the keyboard in front of him. He looked back down at the pass still in his hands, tapping it against his fingers.
Connor spoke again, still addressing the computer monitors.
“He recognised your mug in my hands and asked me where you were. He was…um…fairly insistent.” Connor spun on his chair again, “Now give me that and I’ll get it back to him.” He reached out his hand and took the pass from Stephen’s fingers. “And you owe me a pint. Corner House at half six.” He gave a small smile, which turned into a full grin when Stephen nodded.
“Pint at half six. You’re on.” Stephen smiled in return as Connor turned to the screens once more. Well, he knew that Ryan had asked where he was, found out, and then made no effort to find him. And he’d even been down the corridor - the pass proved that - but he hadn’t come in to see him. That told him everything he needed to know.
And on top of that now he had to go for a drink with Connor and sit through at least one pint’s worth of dinosaur geekery.
Oh god. What if he started talking about Doctor Who again?
~*~*~*~*~*~
Connor found Ryan in the armoury. It was much easier to find someone when you had access to the CCTV cameras. He meandered down and gave the soldier back his pass.
“This was found in one of the corridors.”
Ryan took it with a look of surprise. “Thanks mate, I hadn’t even realised I lost it. I owe you one.”
“How about a pint? 6.30 in the Corner House?”
Ryan was so flummoxed by the invitation he forgot to say no and found himself nodding. Connor did his weird bouncy grin thing and left. Ryan stared after him, wondering what exactly he had just got himself into.

Connor walked into the pub and saw Stephen already sitting at a table with two pints in front of him. With a friendly smile he sat down opposite him and picked up the untouched drink, taking a sip.
“Cheers mate. So, want to talk about it?”
“Nothing to talk about mate.” Stephen replied. Something caught his eye and Stephen glanced behind Connor towards the door, then back at Connor. “I ah…” He indicated over his shoulder, pushed his chair away from the table and walked in the direction of the toilets.

Ryan entered the pub and saw Connor sitting at a table, his back to the door. Opposite him sat Stephen. Ryan paused, then put his head down and headed for the bar. He had promised to buy Connor a pint and he’s stick to that, but he didn’t fancy hanging around if Stephen was here. He didn’t think he could face a cozy lads night out again just yet.
As he ordered a drink for Connor, out of the corner of his eye he saw Stephen stand and head towards the gents. He paid, picked up the drink and headed to the table.
“Hi Connor.”
Connor turned his head and smiled in greeting. Ryan indicated to the temporarily vacated chair.
“I’m pleased you’ve got company because I remembered I’m supposed to be somewhere tonight. But here’s that pint I owed you. Maybe we can do it another time.”
He put the drink on the table, gave a quick nod and headed back out of the door.
Connor watched him go in puzzlement, then his phone beeped in his pocket. Opening it he saw he had a text from Stephen.
“Sorry, suddenly not feeling well, headed out the back door. Have a good night.”
Connor looked between the door and his phone open mouthed.
“And people think I’m clueless.” He looked at the three pints lined up in front of him, one untouched, and shrugged. He pulled up a number on his phone and hit call.
“Hey. Can you get away yet? I’m in the pub…C’mon, I’ll buy you a pint... Brilliant, see you in a minute.”
