"I could never be your woman" - White Town on not being your woman

I often look into the past to the days when I was a mere boy and realize how much I would've kicked my own ass. From wearing the same ratty green camper’s vest that was poorly coordinated with a blue tie dye shirt everyday to spending countless dollars on pogs, I wasn't a very cool kid to say the least, this was confirmed by a girl I was bullied by and who I was genuinely afraid of. In fact, she still wields the power to make me defecate in fear which proves that I'm still not very cool. However, it’s not to say that I haven't had a taste of how fantastic it is to be cool. A perfect example of this would be the fateful day when I had one of my many mix tapes blaring from my new Panasonic "shockwave" walkman. Amidst hits and misses such as the Cardigans' "Lovefool", Sneaker Pimps' "6 Underground" and the all too memorable White Town's "Your Woman" (I Could Never Be Your Woman) came Daft Punk's "Da Funk". While walking home with the sounds of thumping bass and electric growls, I felt like hot shit for five minutes and twenty-nine seconds. Strolling down the street to the beat, I felt like those around me trembled at how cool I looked with my low rent Harry Potter-esque glasses and comb over. That day Daft Punk made me realize what it feels like to be a God. A God that listens to and enjoys Daft Punk.

Flash forward to Christmas of 2001. Aimee, a cute girl whom I'd had a slight crush on gives me a hug and hands me a wrapped package. It was "Discovery", the album responsible for "One More Time", "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" and for the hopeless romantic inside me, "Digital Love". The album was undeniably addictive and throughout the rest of my high school career, I secretly played "Something About Us" in my mind as the girl I fancied walked passed me down the hall. It was a bit creepy to say the least.

2005 saw Daft Punk's "Human After All" as the tail end of my under appreciated quip that went a little something like this...

Ken
Hey did you like the new Daft Punk album?

Friend
Eh, its ok. It seems a bit weak actually.
I mean don't get me wrong, I think I'm just
a bit disappointed, after two great albums, y'know?

Ken
Oh boy, do I ever know!
I totally agree. I mean, they're robots right?
But shall I go as far as to say that perhaps
they're "human after all" hahahaha

Friend
That's not funny.
Despite my slight disappointment for their last album, it is undeniable they are amongst one of the most prominent music influences of my formative years. In fact, they are on my list of acts I'd like to see before my future self comes back in a time machine to beat me to a pulp for being so uncool. In closing, Daft Punk is a show that I've been waiting for since I was twelve years old.
