I finished work on Friday at 5 o'clock thinking we would have just enough time to get to Calgary and see everything (The White Stripes). But....
-Denise had to go to the bank and pay off her credit.
-We had to go to Didsbury to see Denise's mum and sister and then we had pizza there. Also, small tour of the town.
-Got lost in Calgary as we both had no idea where to go.
Although all those set backs, we parked really close to doors as we had a FREE complimentry parking pass to go along with our FREE tickets. How lucky can you get!? We couldn't find the way to the executive area but we just kept walking up and up and finally found the place. It wasn't very busy and the bartender said that not many people come to the concerts as the hockey games.
By the way, the free tickets were from Jenn. This is Denise's ex co-worker that came to the superhero party(see pics on facebook), who got arrested for pushing over the policeman that came to answer to the three noise complaints we managed to recieve.
We sat through the opening band who were terrible. I can't even describe the genre or anything about them. I can't believe they even played a show that big. We sat and talked about work while the terrible band left and the 30 min set up required for two people.
Then, I saw Meg walking backstage and I yelled and then everyone else in the exec suite followed suite. They started with a few strum and beats but then got started with "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground". Jack was really amazing from the beginning. Decked in red attire, he sang his heart out to the screaming crowd below who apparently saw fit to blaze up in front of him. As much as I opposed this it make the crowd look really cool in the strobes when the clouds of smoke lit up.
"Icky Thump" was next. This was really interesting as they played the 'single' right at the beginning as opposed to leaving it closer to the end. I suppose The White Stripes don't need to rely on this, which Snow Patrol, OKGo, and Sam Roberts used.
Everytime I go to a concert I can't help but compare all of them I have been to. I rate where I am, Stage Presence, set-up, list of songs, all these things added together so I can decide which ones were better. However, as much as I add and calculate, concerts have to be based on enjoyment.
They played all night, even Meg got off her drums to sing "Cold, Cold Night". "Jolene" and "Hotel Yorba" were some personal favs. But to end with such a strong rendition of "Seven Nation Army" was so key to their encore, which was an impressive seven songs.
Being in the exec area, it seems like you are observing as opposed to participating which didn't make the concert as enjoyable. Although, I did enjoy the perks of the exec box; going to bathroom three steps away and hearing the music through the paper thin wall, bar directly behind, comfortable stools.
We left straight away as Denise had to open the next day and I had to work early aswell. Chelsea and I made a plans to see each other at my pool.
So we drove home listening to White Blood Cells. Got home late and ofcourse had trouble getting up for work, but as always, it was definately worth it.
Saw Chelsea at work and she gave me a wonderful scrapbook. It had lots of funny pictures and not just the one of her lifting me off the ground. Did your mum take that one? Also, we should teach elementry math...2 + 3 = 5. Who wouldn't enjoy learning that?
Moments after Chelsea left I was in the water. An boy had gotten too deep in the waves so I went in for him. Also, I think it is important for our lifeguards to know that when you are performing a rescue, although we are trained, we would much prefer it if the waves were off. Egg beater, with unifrom and sandals, in the waves is so difficult. The next time I teach Bronze cross class they totally have to do everything wearing sandals.
I got off early at work and then left for Edmonton. We went to Ikea so Christina could buy some things for her camp. We went straight downtown and parked at the Delta near the Greyhound terminal. We walked around found this cool restaurant and I had some delicious Paella. Christina had Malaysian Goreng which looked really good.
We walked around the Arts festival and watched a Carribean band play and headed to Shaw at around 7ish. I could not believe how long the line was. It starts in Shaw, up two stories of stairs, out the door and down the road for atleast two blocks. We decided to go for a walk adn we ended up round the back where we just walked through a back door past security and right into the concert hall. We got some good places near the front.
The opening band sounded really different. They looked similar but sounded completely different. I think they were different... They played a really long set, almost an hour. The Stripes started off similar but there set included alot more songs from White Blood Cells and Elephant. The set was actually really different from the one played in Calgary. During "We are going to be friends", Jack forgot the words/where he was and asked the audience to help out, after listening for a moment, he simply asks "What song are you singing?" So he started all over again, which was fine by me and it certainly seemed to the rest of the audience.
I thought there was alot of weed in the Saddledome, it was nothing compared to Shaw. There was smoke everywhere. The security didn't seem to be to occupied with this as they kept busy enforcing a new, more strict crowdsurfing rule. Hmm, illegal substance or crowdsurfing?
Most notably missing from the Shaw set was "My Doorbell", "Blue Orchid", and "Fell in love with a girl". I was a little upset. Also, "Hardest button to button" was also missing from both shows.
Meg got up again to sing "Cold, Cold Night" and her voice seemed alot stronger and more confident which made for a more enjoyable performance. Jack took his turn and sang "Passive Manipulation". However, he never finshed the lines leaving those who have never heard the song to wonder what could possibly link this song to incest.
Again Jack finished his encore with "Seven Nation Army" and substituted Edmonton for Wichita which got the crowd roaring through the smoky haze but he got back to sing his rendition of "Boy needs a home", and the crowd sang him off. He then re entered the stage with an Alberta flag (which he did in Calgary) but this time Meg gave it a bit of a shake.
All in all they were both amazing concerts and I am so happy I went.
Also, I have tickets to Rufus and Sarah Slean. Imax tickets for "Order of the Phoenix" on Wednesday 11th and 13th!
Yep, I love this no responsibility - go to concerts and such lifestyle.
I didn't spell check this as it is so long so...blah
