Keep bringing up the past why don't you?!

I've always been a sucker for cartoons, possibly its the bright colours and extreme violence and simply endless possibilities of what could be done with it. Even now, I'm almost twenty and when I go home I whack on Cartoon Network or Nick Toons; except these days, there is nothing but crap. They seem too reliant on bright colours and talking down to children, who're actually very discerning given the chance.

The only modern cartoons I can stand to watch are Dexter's Lab, Powerpuff Girls, Spongebob Squarepants and I can just about manage Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. The cartoons of today seem to be based almost entirely on those of the past ten years, for example you have you Gendy Tartakovsky clones using the thick black outlines and flat, undetailed backgrounds, similar to Tartakovsky's Dexter's Lab.

I miss the old cartoons, how about a quick list, Ren & Stimpy, Bump in the Night, Captain Planet, Bucky O'Hare, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Biker Mice From Mars, Reboot, The Hurricanes, Danger Mouse, Mr. Ben, Batman the Animated Series, Transformers, Spider-man, He-Man, Thundercats, Sharky & George, Johnny Bravo.

Since Pokémon the American animators have made a string of Japanese inspired cartoons with nasty, jerky, cheap animation and it may seem dubious to say, but a lot of the time it just feels like an exercise to sell toys, not that we didn't have them when we grew up; we did, they were just better. I don't think its nostalgia, as the average level of quality has dropped, mainly in writing and creativity. At the end of the day, children (myself included) will watch a badly animated cartoon if the stories are good, just look at Danger Mouse, I can't get enough of Danger Mouse.

In the early '90s there was a real surge in quality and creativity, Batman the Animated Series (B:TAS) which was spawned from the 1989 Burton Batman film as a cash-in proved that you could make a serious Saturday morning cartoon for kids and adults alike. The animation was amazing, they painted everything on black cells because the series was so dark, it saved paint, the voice acting and untouchably good and it ran it's course. Ren & Stimpy were equally as good and creative, basically giving Nickelodeon a style it could run with for the rest of the decade.

And now for some...
