I've been somewhat beating myself up over my whole decision to step down from office manager in Stoneham over the past week, since this is the first week it became effective ... but then today put it all in perspective! Today and yesterday I went to cover the Winchester store (which I had never worked at before). Every person I came into contact with there was nothing but nice and friendly to me. When I was leaving today, a woman from another dept who I had only said hello to this morning, thanked me for coming to help!! Here's someone who isn't even affected by my being there- she has no reason to care whatsoever- but she went so far as to thank me herself! The management also gave me $35 gas money and $10 in gift cards as thanks for coming.
Meanwhile.... my last two days in Stoneham... The store manager skipped out early to go on his vacation and did not even so much as bat an eye at me. The assistant manager simply told me "have a good day" when I left. For four months, I gave my all to that store. I NEVER took my two paid 15 minute breaks I was entitled to every day. Very rarely did I spend my lunch hour out of the office- occassionally I went out, a couple times I went upstairs, but for the most part I went out into the store, picked up something to eat, brought it back, ate and spent the rest of my *unpaid* lunch time working. When we got the gas station, I taught myself how to balance out the gas station and research errors with the balancing and the sales. I then taught my 2 backups. I TAUGHT THE WOMAN WHO REPLACED ME!!!!! .... When they rolled out with the new system of "weekly lane accountability" a couple months ago - again I basically taught myself, when I needed help I made the phone calls to people who could help me and then I taught the other two how to do it ....
And never once did I get so much as a GOODBYE...a good luck... a "gee Jonathan good job, thanks for everything, we wish you well"...
It's OK though, really. You know why? In two weeks, the woman who replaced me is going on vacation for a week and a half. And I happen to know that Denise, the backup, has had down for two of the days in that week off for a couple months now. So she won't be balancing those days ... Who do you think they're going to call? Oh yeah... they'll call me ... But you know what? The management couldn't have cared less when I was there. They couldn't have cared less when I left. So logic tells me they really won't care if I come back. Therefore, they can find someone else. :-)
