Jonathan-more familiarly JonJohn-is someone who has pushed his educational experience to include everything he sees in relation to media.  He came to Hope a transfer student, something that usually puts students at a disadvantage.    Not this time.  We welcomed him and he sought involvement in classes and our production arm, Video Services.  He became the student manager of that service.

Over these last few years, JonJohn has taken every class I teach-Intro to MassComm, Media Production I (copywriting, audio, studio TV, and EFP), Media Production II (beginning broadcast journalism), Media Production IV (documentary), and, now, Media Production III (broadcast news production).  He serves as news director in this latter class, something he is well qualified for, based on his two internships: one at WZZM last summer, and the other currently at WOOD TV.  He went out on his own at TV8, shooting and editing sports.  …As and intern???  Yup!  He has worked on just about every television show and shoot we’ve had.  He’s produced basketball and football coverage (three-camera shoots), coaches’ shows, talk shows, and live-event coverage (the college Convocation, the Summit on Racism, our Critical Issues Symposium, the Veritas Forum) that goes out on our community cable system (9,000 homes).  He has taken advantage of our affiliation with Compass Arts Academy to work through the Film A-Z class and subsequently to labor on local movie production.  He has even undertaken a directed study at the Joint Archives of Holland interviewing leaders in the Hispanic community as a part of the efforts to document this history of Holland.  Geoffrey Reynolds, the director there, relies on his abilities and expertise.

And JonJohn is sure of his calling: he wants to work sports news, perhaps for a local station, but eventually at the ESPN level.  I believe he’ll get there; he has a gift as a technical director in addition to his leadership skills as a producer and manager.

Add to all the above a confirmed humility, an eagerness to learn anything new, the perseverance to struggle through frustration, and the integrity demanded by the best of this profession.  I trust him with anything.  So did his peers.  He earned their respect and their confidence.
What more can I say?  We send out some really wonderful students and JonJohn is the best of the best.

But I have found a girl I like hanging out with.
