I'm having a rather sentimental day, so I wanted to start a discussion on how we all came to like SHINee and our respective favourite members (although we're here, it doesn't have to be Jonghyun, of course)!

I'm SUPER late but this is pretty recent on my flist, okay, so we're just going to pretend that it isn't late at all. plus I always want to talk about Jonghyun so I am just here

I got into kpop in march of 2009, I think it was, I'd known WG/Big Bang/BoA etc. but not really kpop as an industry and started on omntd falala typical. They released "Juliette" in May and tbh, I didn't really dig it, even now it's not one of my favourite songs but I remember admiring Jonghyun for writing the lyrics and later I was so incredibly obsessed with their acoustic version (and even now I'll really only listen to that one, haha) that I had the subbed video on my hard drive and everything; I deleted like the 50 kpop mvs I had to clear out my hard drive in a wave of panic a few months ago but I remember going through and it would be the last Shinee (I can't write SHINee, just roll with it) mv I could possibly delete, other than Ring Ding Dong. Which was the best song/era/mv/EVERYTHING, like totally agreed. It's why I like Jonghyun and Key, and when most of the photos of Jonghyun from that era make him look like an adorable puppy, I MEAN. I listened to some of their covers - I remember Sexy Love the best because I have Jessica problems, and tbh I really love Jongsica - and just loving his voice. Whoops I forgot, before they released Juliette the mv I liked best was Love Like Oxygen - like how much do I love the coattail-flipping move SO MUCH - and was addicted to the mp3 of Amigo. SHUSH. It's like crack to me idk. But right so I liked them, in a roundabout way, and Juliette came and went and when RDD came out I was like OH YOU GUYS okay I'm here and loved RDD and Jo Jo and by the time Lucifer came out I was in full spaz mode, and the album was constantly playing in my car, at the gym, whatever I was doing, I was addicted. Even now when I listen to it I get a huge rush of nostalgia and am basically like *A* I love this album until it's over.

Honestly I haven't followed their Japanese promotions as much as I could have (tbf, I haven't really followed Big Bang's either and I LOVE them, the only exception is Soshi because the exception to everything is always Soshi) so my feelings simmered a little this past year, but Sherlock was fantastic, and I adore the song, and the mv, and the choreography and they are just. They're the best. I was reading the comments and I think it's funny that their thing is that they don't make mistakes, I hadn't really heard it said that way before, but I remember akp (or someone, ugh I hope it wasn't seoulbeats or w/e?) was talking about the 2008 boy group debuts and how Shinee was doing so much better because they were the most disciplined group that debuted that year and implied that this, on top of their talent and appeal, would get them really far and I kind of hate it, actually, when people are like UGH REMIX #2304982 OF A SHINEE SONG at an SMTown concert and I just want to be like, shut up, they have the charisma and stage presence and everything, really, to do as many remixes as they want, if you're not into them stfu. They are so incredibly talented, and I don't want to start talking about f(x) because LOL my debuted-three-years-ago-f(x) feelings but they have done so much in 4 years and I'm so glad they've gotten so far because they deserved it. They've worked hard and wow I just remember this is supposed to be a Jonghyun-ish post and I wrote an ESSAY this is what happens when the only group you've ever written something for is soshi, and the one Janet suggested I do is literally like, nine paragraphs long. lmao.

I usually have a thing for main vocals, because they're the ones who love singing, who are clearly idols because they love singing, and want to do nothing else. Like how Tiffany talks about how she's not even sure if she could do anything else for a living (she could, but okay FINE Tiffany) and Jonghyun has always loved music (bb playing bass! smh that he wasn't main singer) and he's always singing off-stage even if there's a camera, just to himself, because it's his passion. and I'm so proud of him for his composition, whether it's just lyrics or more, because he works hard and I'm excited to see more stuff from him in the future. uh. and he just has an amazing voice, obviously, but it's like you can't touch it, it's pure gold. The Lucifer note still has me dumbstruck sometimes. Oh great I just talked about talent for a paragraph, I didn't even get into his personality. HE IS THE SWEETEST we all know this, he is so earnest and genuine and as far as I can tell has good relationships with everyone in the band (I know less about Taemin and Minho because Onew and Key are my other rotating biases? excuse?) and his relationships with people outside seem as far as fans can tell heartfelt and fun and genuine (saying that again) and I love him he's the best.

ugh I completely didn't mean to ignore you, sorry this is so late! and I'm just going to reply all out of order: in his old high school band, he wanted to be the vocalist, but the role was taken. idk lately I think his voice has really been used for these vocal gymnastics, like long and high notes, and sometimes it's distressing because he's talked about how his voice is being strained and needs rest but he doesn't get to, and how it's something you can't ever get back once it's gone. His lower register is so pretty and we hardly hear it these days :(

ugh his tweets today were so cute (as per), i want to cry (as per!!) I'm grateful for him, I really am. I'm so happy his hair is growing out... ; o ; I do think he was the one member who was genuinely friendly and close with everyone in the group (I say "was" because I think the dynamics have changed sufficiently that they're all pretty friendly now). There are a lot of pictures of Jonghyun with Taemin and Minho hanging out together off-schedule around debut! and yes I love the MV for Love Like Oxygen, JONGHYUN LOOKS SO GOOD IN GOLD I HAVE LITERALLY GONE THROUGH ALL THE COLOURS MULTIPLE TIMES LIKE "WHAT COLOUR DOES NOT LOOK FLATTERING ON JONGHYUN" AND COME UP WITH NOTHING. NOTHING!!

I just realised I hadn't responded to this! I wasn't even expecting a reply lmao, I really did just dump this here and then like leave. I thought I'd heard that he wanted to be the main vocal but ah I'm glad it's true! Taeyeon said the same thing about her voice, and while their voices can obviously handle it, the repetition and constantly being one of the main vocals laying a stable foundation for every performance must be beyond exhausting. Yeah um, protecting the health of your artists is important, but the voice is an instrument and you have to take really good care of it and let it rest sometimes.

His tweet for Minho/To the Beautiful You :') I don't watch their shows (I don't watch anyone's shows lmao terrible fan) but even I've noticed that they all seem close now, that I can't really distinguish the closer relationships. Like obviously I love Jongkey and Jongyu but they all seem to be doing well. HE LOOKS SO GREAT IN IT I AGREE ugh I love him in dark colours/grey I mean you know what I mean, they're usually the ones in your edits and I'm like but this is my FAVOURITE OUTFIT HOW DID YOU KNOW. ♥
