“Of all the places Jinki, you had to choose here.”

Jonghyun grumbles as he edges into his plastic seat, flicking away a used burger wrapper and a coke stained straw. Jinki laughs at him bashfully, grinning at his friend before he bites into his drumstick.

“You should go get something.” He says between bites, pointing at his tub of chicken. The blonde groans, stretching in his seat groggily before dipping into his bag for a chocolate bar.

“Come on Jjong, a little chicken won’t hurt.”

“Jinki, I assume you’ve forgotten that we’ve met here for five times this week. And that today’s only Tuesday.” The younger boy huffs before stealing a piece of chicken from Jinki’s tub, nibbling it with a thin scowl.

“You should just confess, if you like him that much.”

He smirks as his words crimsoned his hyung’s cheeks, whom had looked down onto his meat as a reply.

“What was his name again? Min….”

“Choi Minho.”

Jinki mutters under his breath, obviously gesturing to Jonghyun that they should keep quiet. He tries to look casual as his eyes skid across the counter of the fast food shop.

But his casual acts never worked, at least on the tall boy that he was staring at, and that was enough to make his heart jump out of rhythm.

Jinki glances nervously as Minho types in the orders good-naturedly, smiling at the customer before him before gently urges the next to come forth. He can’t help but to think how cute and smart the brunette looked in his KFC uniform, a simple white shirt put together with a magenta hat that wrote ‘’Chicken time!.”

Jonghyun shakes his head at him helplessly and reaches for another piece of chicken, letting his friend daydream over his crush until the point in which a tissue was needed to wipe the drool from the corners of his hyung’s lips.

“Yah hyung. If you’re not going to pay attention to me, I’m going to leave.”

“But I am paying attent-“

Jonghyun groans despairingly as Jinki blushes a deep red when Minho looks at him, giving him a friendly wave.

“J-jong.! Did you see that? He…he waved at me!!! He waved at me!!!” the older shakes Jonghyun’s arms furiously, with Jonghyun grunting as the chicken in his hand fell to the ground.

“He waved!? Oh my god. That’s amazing.’ He says through gritted teeth as his hyung continues to stare at the cashier boy with a love-struck expression on his face, his eyes twinkling and his arms flapping when he surveyed each and every one of Minho’s actions.

Jinki splutters confusedly as a pair of soft hands covered his eyes, ready to shout at someone before he noticed that it was Kibum, who had just sat down next to Jjong.

“Hi Key.”

The diva waves his greeting off his shoulder, and picks through his chicken before Jinki could even protest.

“Gosh.” Kibum comments as he peels the skin off. “All this is seriously going to blow me off my diet.” He eyes Jinki knowingly before motioning with his eyes towards Minho. Jinki gulps.

“Don’t even bother Bummie, he’s hopeless.” Jonghyun mumbles in a half dead voice, leaning onto Kibum’s shoulder. Key pats his boyfriend’s hair affectionately before returning his attention to Jinki, who was looking at them enviously.

“Go for it Jinki, seriously. Look at him. I’ll give you 100 bucks if that guy’s straight.”

“But what if he really is!??!? Then I’m…I’m…”

Kibum rolls his eyes before feeding the remaining chicken in his hands into Jonghyun’s mouth.

“Jjong, let’s go out for a date and leave dear Romeo by himself.” Jonghyun nods excitedly before wishing his hyung good luck and rushing out the fast food restaurant.

Jinki grumbles, but his frown was overturned when Minho smiles at him again.

Damn.

When the Chicken shop posts a job recruit, Jinki literally flew to it, applied for it and got in, since he was the only one who applied. He taps his feet excitedly by the rubber steps in front of the shop on his first day of work, fixing his messy auburn hair with a comb and drying his clammy palms before walking in swiftly. He takes a deep breath, and struts into the kitchen. His breathing rate increases rapidly as he sees Minho up close for the first time, dark short hair and all, with his signature smile. Jinki grins stupidly and places his hand in front of him, jumping in delight when the other shakes it warmly. He calms down noticeably when Minho gives him a weird glance

.

“Hi, I’m Jinki.”

“Minho. Nice to meet you.”

He feels his toes tingle when Minho smiles brightly and greets him, trying not to embarrass himself as he bows ( knocking over a box of chips) and retires to the employee’s room, changing into his uniform.

Chicken may be Jinki’s favourite food, but his first day at the shop was pretty much a disaster. He tries to fry the fries, only ending up burning a batch of them as he was too busy concentrating on the chicken. He had to say “Excuse me miss, what did you say?” At least three times for each customer to get the order down, and by the end of the day he slumped down onto an empty table as Minho cleared up. They locked the shop up together and closed the lights.

“I’m so sorry Minho-shi! I-i...well, I’m pretty much always like that.” Jinki bows apologetically.

Minho sighs. “It’s Okay. I’m sure you’re going to get better in time Hyung.”

Jinki blushes faintly and smiles, bidding him goodbye.

“How was it hyung?”

Jonghyun asks halfheartedly as he went over his music sheets in the cafeteria. Jinki looks down onto the table, twiddling his thumbs before speaking up.

“I messed up Jjong!! I mean, well, I didn’t exactly, but you know, I bet he didn’t form a very good impression of me and then well, you see-“

“Impressions change over time hyung…like it did with yours.” The blonde mumbles. Jinki frowns and slaps him on the shoulder, worrying about going to work again that day.

Minho finds Jinki rubbing on him, the clumsiness, and genuine smiles of the other capturing his heart over time. They two become good friends, even meeting up in school when Jinki discovers Minho’s uni textbooks on Atheletics, and walking together to the shop frequently as they shared their shifts together. Whenever Jinki spent time with Minho he would discover another side of another and his heart would beat faster, something that he would never get used to. Jonghyun and Kibum would still urge him to confess- but he couldn’t muster enough courage to speak without stuttering, less to confess.

He liked their relationship, which was something between the lines of lovers and good friends. Their hands would sometimes brush against each other, but Jinki didn’t say anything, because Minho didn’t say anything. Minho would move abnormally close to Jinki when they spent time together outside, and Jinki didn’t mind, because Minho didn’t seem mind. He didn’t really understand the whole point of it though- were they just really good friends, or something more? The question remained buried deep inside his mind.

Jinki arrived punctually (it had become a habit) for his shift, only to find himself completing it without Minho in sight. He sighs as he scans the cleaned tables and chairs and locks up the shop, walking home alone for the first time in weeks. Minho had started disappearing for a while, and he had no idea what was going on. Finally, after his curious conscience bugged him for nights and days, he rang up the manager and addressed the matter to him properly.

“Minho? Yes, didn’t he tell you? He left for America after saving enough money and applying for a good college. That was why we hired you, he was supposed to teach you the basics and then leave the shop to you.”

Jinki hangs up on the phone, his heart heavy and empty as he digested the news.

“Hyung! Hyung!!”

Kibum and Jonghyun knocks frantically on Jinki’s dorm door, relieved when the said person opens his door sleepily. His eyes were bloodshot, his hair ruffled up into a mess and his limbs dangling casually from a pair of old pajamas.

“Gosh guys, I just overslept. What do you think I was going to do?”

Jonghyun and Kibum looked at each other knowingly, smiling as they then hugged their hyung tightly before hushing him to get changed.

Jinki had not given up on the shop; everyday like a routine, he walks from the university to the shop, doing his duty and finishing each shift perfectly as he breathed in the smell that was redolent of fried oil and grease as it reminded him of Minho. Everyday he would look carefully as each customer entered the shop, hoping that the next one was Minho, who he had imagined to magically pop back from the US as a surprise or something. That was impossible after all, for Jinki knew that Minho meant much more to him than what he meant to the other. It had been almost half a year since Minho had left, and January was nearly in sight.

He smiles at his next customer, a small young boy. As he readied to take an order, the little boy places a white envelope on the cashier, with no name written on it. Jinki looks at him confusedly.

“J-jinki hyung! Somebody told me to give this to you.” He whispers, tiptoeing over the table top.

“Who?” Don’t get your hopes up, don’t get your hopes up Jinki. Don’t.

“It was this really tall hyung! He was hanging outside the shop staring at you.”

Jinki opens the envelope hurriedly before the other customers complain, and his eyes widen with joy as he reads the letter with shaking hands.

Hi Hyung,

See you after the shift. Don’t lock the doors.

Minho.

Jinki spends the rest of his shift in glee, scrubbing the tables harder than usual and stepping up on his ordering speed, whisking dishes to his customers faster than he had ever done before. The thought of being able to see Minho again bugged his mind, like a mosquito bite you can’t scratch. He sits down patiently on a table after his shift, looking yearningly at the glass door. As he brushed his hair in place and was in a process of looking like an idiot, a tall figure merged from behind the door.

He held his breath as the familiar twinkling of the door chime rang in his ears, and looked up.

Minho.

The brunette greeted him with a shy smile, shaking the snow off his head gently before taking something from behind his back. Jinki stares at him. He was just the way he remembered half a year ago, only now his hair was longer and he seemed…taller. Those large alien like eyes looked at him apologetically as those full lips formed a little smile.

“Happy birthday Jinki-hyung.” he whispers as he lays a strawberry cake on the table, taking his large trench coat off.

“Y-you…you remembered.” Jinki manages as he choked on his words, looking up at Minho as the other sat down.

“Of course, now blow the candles out hyung.” he obliges, and giggles as the smoke travels up Minho’s nose, causing him to splutter.

“I though you left f-forever.”

“I just went for an exchange program hyung, I never thought you would be so worried.”

“Of course I’m worried! You disappear without telling me and I had to find out from the manager about what happened to you! Now that I’m thinking about it, I was quite stupid for even worrying about you.” Jinki huffed.

“But you missed me, didn’t you?” Minho pressed, grinning cheekily.
“I-i…well, I presumably, as a colleague-“

“Just as a colleague?”

“I, as a Friend, did miss you. A lot. Very much. But I mean, just as a friend.”

“Why did you keep this job then? You don’t even need this. You’re second in the year hyung, you’ve got a scholarship.”

Jinki blushes as he distracts Minho with a piece of cake. Minho smiles and takes a bite, looking expectantly at him.

“I like chicken.”

“Oh. I thought that was it. Nothing else I suppose-“

“No! I mean, well, this, I , I…you know, I…”

“I know, I like you too hyung, when I first saw you looking at me.”

Minho grins as Jinki turns ruby red, and dabs a bit of cream onto his hyung’s cheek, kissing it off gently. The smaller envelopes him into a tight hug filled with emotion, and smiles happily when they locked up the shop together as usual, only this time going home together, no words being said, as their warm hearts were enough to melt the winter’s cold.

Maybe he did mean as much to Minho as Minho meant to him.

“Finally. You.Did.It.”

Jonghyun grins as Jinki introduces Minho to Kibum and himself. Jinki hushes him and leans onto Minho’s shoulder, grinning from ear to ear as Kibum questioned Minho of all his habits, likings and taste. Jinki orders their meal, turning satisfactorily back towards them.

“I hope you like chicken.”
