Spilling mistakes

I pride myself on having a near perfect memory (though it’s fair to say that my recall isn’t quite up to the same high standard).

Even so, I’m usually pretty good at remembering names, faces, facts, pointless trivia and the like, which is why I’m often surprised at how the correct spelling of a few, seemingly simple, words continues to evade me.

How hard can it be to remember how to spell a simple little word like ‘family’? Yet time and again I find myself reaching for the backspace key after typing in an extra ‘l’.

‘Anti-establishment’? No problem. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious? Piece of cake (I can even spell ‘dociousaliexpiisticfragicalirupus’, the (technically incorrect) backwards version Ms. Poppins mentions in the song of the same name.

Despite this skill, any time I want to type in words like ‘necessary’ or ‘embarrassment’ it takes me two or three attempts before I get the darn things spelled correctly.

All I can say is, thank goodness for dictionaries and spell-checkers.

How about you?

What words do you have trouble spilling… er, spelling?

writing, fiction
