As part of my overall plan for world domination, getting myself and my work known, I'm looking to develop a long-term, working relationship with local schools.
Last Wednesday, I visited the good folks at Lakehurst Elementary school in Lakehurst, New Jersey, to give my I are a writer! presentation. I did two assemblies, K thru 4th grade and 5th thru 8th grade.
I can't speak for the audience, but I had a lot of fun. The kids were engaged and well-behaved. I was impressed with their questions, and pleasantly surprised to discover that more than a few of the older ones wrote fiction outside of school - one of the moms there told me her 7th grader has already written a novel, the 4th grade daughter of an another had written a play!
The school also booked me to give the first three modules of my Fun with Fiction program to the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classes over the next three months, so I've added the books they're currently reading in class to my tbr pile. I've already started on Charlotte's Web which, as believe I've mentioned before, has one my favorite opening lines: 'Where's Papa going with that ax?'
Anyone else doing school visits?
I'd love to hear about your experiences, and any advice you'd care to share.
