Went to see the Chagall and the Russian Avant Garde exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario yesterday. Gave me some perspective on Chagall (nee Moshe Siegel!) I hadn't had... in terms of his intense, lifelong emotional and artistic bond to his the schtetl he grew up in in the Russian Pale of Settlement, and his Jewishness, and in terms of his artistic fellow travellers and the constructivist movement in Russia/USSR. The art was very interesting. I saw several pieces I wanted to take home.
It was my friend Hersh's suggestion we go. I don't know that I would have otherwise. I've seen some very good Chagalls, and the Russian avant garde didn't really call to me. I'm glad he got me there. We both liked the exhibition a lot, but added to our own amusement, if no one else's, by translating the titles of paintings into Yiddish. So Still Life with Lobster became Nischt tod, mit tref.
After the exhibition, we had dinner at the AGO restaurant, Frank. It was Russian-themed. The starter and dessert were yummy (gravlax and bliny, and apple charlotte russe respectively). The main course, brisket with chourcroute was meh.
But... I had a great time with Hersh. Now, he's one of my oldest friends and we always have a good time. But this was kinda extra-good. So yay us.
