i figured out tonight (this morning) that quite possibly some of the times lj seems to be not working for me may be due to the way that firefox handles lj. because lj's status reported no problems i used internet explorer to check and it was working fine there. so i rebooted my laptop and voila! lj in firefox was working again just fine. at least i have the knowing half of this battle down.
