Hi Jonathan, I read your blog and comment a bit on coalescent, but other than you wouldn't have any reason to know me... Despite living on the opposite side of the continent (Sydney), I must say I'm mighty proud that we've got another Aussie so prominent in the SF world (and how cool is it to have Damien Broderick reviewing in Locus mag these days!)
Anyway, I have a question, and I assure you I'm not being narky, just puzzled. I can't find a better venue than commenting on your LJ, and I apologise for this hijacking. I'm puzzled about the title of the M. John Harrison story in the Science Fiction - The Best of 2004 anthology (which, like 2003's, is a fantastic selection by the way). I was going to assume that Harrison had retitled it somewhere along the line, but no, it's still "tourism" on Amazon, and it looks like Gardner's anthology is titling it that too.
Was there something deliberate here, or is it just a weird mistake? Again, I'm not trying to draw attention to it in public, just asking... I guess my question comes because I'm an editor; well I have done Macleay College's diploma in book editing & publishing, but my experience is in online, academic and other non-fiction really. I've read & edited for Charlie Stross enough to be in Accelerando's acknowledgements, but I haven't worked in-house at a publisher.
Oh, and briefly, the anthology you'll be co-editing with Gardner sounds awesome :) [And I note Gardner has another which he's named Greg Egan as contributor to...]
Thanks for the kind words. I've been very lucky to get to do what I do, and I was really happy to be able to recruit Damien for Locus. The simple answer to your question is that it was a typo that wasn't picked up in the proofs. I know the story is called "tourism", and we just stuffed it up. Nothing terribly impressive, unfortunately, but there it is.
On Greg and such - yeah, Gardner has Greg doing a story, and he's supposed to be doing a couple for me too. We should see a bunch of new Egan stories, all things being equal.
So great to hear there'll be lots of Greg coming out in the next while! I used to correspond with him a lot, and he's always been lovely about replying - even pretty recently. I hope he can continue his passionate promotion of the refugee cause while writing too.
I'm glad to have the answer to the "tourism" question, for some reason. These things happen I guess...
