I prefer happy gay people to angry ones

I read the news and I'm on multiple mailing lists regarding gay rights, and I've noticed in the past couple months that the gay rights movement has taken a more bitter, belligerent, and confrontational posture since the passage of California Proposition 8. Apparently part of the new strategy is to publicly harass and ostracize high profile opponents of gay rights; a sort of backlash effort after a defeat, trying to scare businesses and shame individuals. Additionally, there seems to be an effort to make it politically toxic to work with opponents of gay rights, which comes across as having gay rights activists rocking the boat at a time when everyone else is trying to ride out a storm.

I'm not personally comfortable with this new tone. The gay rights movement has always been about taking risks and being bold, and this is certainly risky, and it may be effective. But I wonder how much is calculated strategy, and how much is just raw anger and frustration that is being used an ultimately destructive manner. I hope that this is a passing phase.
