Google

I love and fear Google.

I love Google because I love the services it provides. But I fear it because it is so powerful, so big. It is the same as the way someone might love and fear a strong government: Perhaps they love government's services, but fear its power over them.

With government, we can control it by voting. But what check is there on Google?

Governments will attack it with anti-trust laws if it grows too powerful, but it still has the power to do evil without being so oppressively large that government intervenes. All *I* can do is have faith in Google to not be evil.

Their unofficial slogan is "Don't Be Evil". And thus far I believe they've adhered to that to my satisfaction. But having a cute slogan doesn't mean they won't violate it over the years.

Google is cool, but every time I grow to incorporate another of its increasingly broad range of services, it makes me a little more nervous. Not enough to not use their services, but maybe enough to say something.
