For Gavroche-Alain: The big brother thing was pretty well mutual, though I think somewhat closer on Gavroche's part than Alain's. (In part just because Gavroche is/was younger, and lets people in wholeheartedly more easily.) Alain thought he was a good kid; he wasn't sure about the cause of the revolutionaries Gavroche died with/for, but he respected that Gavroche's idea of them (from the perspective of the boy he was) was something he considered worth that sacrifice. He respected Gavroche's determination and idealism, and was saddened a lot (if in a wearily unsurprised way) that his city/world/life killed him that young for it.

And so it was extra nice to see him being a happy kid, and to teach him to handle horses and so forth.

Gavroche and River totally should! And River likes him. :) She usually likes kids, and he is no exception; the fact that they tend to think of her as "just River, who's like that" instead of weird or crazy is a nice facet of that. And she recognizes that when it comes down to it he sides with the right side, too. They haven't ever bonded particularly that I can remember, to the point where she'd consider him a real friend and actively seek him out, but she's never had any cause to dislike him either. And he's Ingress's quasi-brother, which she also approves of. Gavroche gets the River equivalent of an amiable thumbs up.

...oh, yes, and to add to the Alain thing - Gavroche's knowledge of gunslingers and what being one meant is a large part of the reason he became a wizard. He knew he couldn't be a gunslinger but he wanted to do and be something as good. Serve the White, as it were.
