So our mayor is on trial. Like actually, in a court. For purportedly taking $1500 of gift cards to Home Depot and shit, donated for poor people in the city, and spending them on herself.
Her defense -- I'm not making this up, this was her lawyer's opening statement -- is that she didn't steal them, because they were actually personal gifts to her. From her boyfriend. Who was a developer. Who was coincidentally recently convicted of bribing different local public officials. Of course she didn't report this gift at the time, as public officials are supposed to do, this gift of a couple hundred $10 and $25 gift certificates, which I guess is what you get for christmas when you're mayor and you're boyfriend is a developer.
On the talk radio shows I listen to, the mayor is still quite popular amongst the callers, who are convinced she's being rail-roaded by the white establishment who doesn't want a black woman mayor.
Which I suppose seems plausible when you wonder why they're bothering to prosecute her for theft of only $1500.
