I ask that only those who have lived in North America answer this poll, and then, only for the period of residence on that continent. Please?....smile.... ( Poll about Changing Residence, behind the cut. )
2) Yes. The older I get, the more quality of life matters to me than other concerns (like material possessions). Maybe that is a function of age?
3) Perhaps. I think this concern is more relevant to you the more tied you are to activity in that community. Hypothetically, if you move out of the liberal NE to a small town in the conservative MidWest, you will see a number of differences in the community, but if most of your life is your career, family, travel and on the internet, then that lack of identification with the community will be less relevant and should be downplayed as a consideration. The more interaction you require with specific parts of the local scene, the more it will (negatively) matter to you to be in a locale that has considerable religious and political differences from your own. Besides, we are talking about the US here. We are a rather tolerant people, even of politics and religion. There is less difference in thought (or at least, much more tolerance) between a citizen of Montana and one of NYC than there is between other intra-national interests in many places elsewhere. I am Jewish, Urban and have led a sophisticated life. None of that is any part of typical life here in central Ohio. Still, I am happier here. Probably didn't say that well enough....
