I ask that only those who have lived in North America answer this poll, and then, only for the period of residence on that continent. Please?....smile.... ( Poll about Changing Residence, behind the cut. )
I said I moved 10 times, but four of those times were b/c I lived at a different place each year of undergrad. It might make more sense to count that as one. Or not.
If my jurisdiction made smoking completely legal, I would hate it (a 10), but I don't think it would be enough to get me to move (hence I answered with a 2).
The most difficult questions for me were the ones asking how much of an increase in taxation would get me to move. Clearly there is *some* number. But it's difficult to answer without there being a context. So taxes increase for me locally but elsewhere? Or taxes increase nationwide, but stay constant for other countries? Taxes increase here but cost of living stays the same? I mean, I'm sure there is some number that would get me to move, but it's difficult to imagine such a large increase without other changes.
How much is too much to pay for a house? 2x? 3x? 5x? I know there is some number for that as well, but here I am living in the Bay Area. (And bought my first home a year ago.)
I really like living here for a lot of reasons. Most of my friends and family are here, the weather is great, the cultural aspects are superb, it's a good place for my career. A couple years ago I would have had a hard time seeing myself moving away. I've since discovered that I will move for love, but I don't know if there is much else.
Yeah, that's not colored at all. :-)
Some clarifications on my responses:
