Rant

I read yesterday a response on someone else's FB entry asserting that making abortion illegal would just be punishing women for having sex, that the main reason listed for having an abortion is finances, so the people who oppose abortion should be helping poverty instead. This would be the same as saying that heroin and cocaine should be legal and we should instead be helping poor people out of the poverty and desperation that drives them to use drugs. It is a lovely sentiment, but as long as abortion and drugs are/would be legal, far, far more people are/would be dying than if they are both illegal. Dying. And the state is/would be saying it's OK that they're dying, and the state is/would be saying it's OK by making them legal.

I honestly do not get this: how one person's poverty is more important than another person's life. And it's not even one for one: a fertile, busy couple can choose avoidance of economic hardship at the expense of *multiple* human lives. I am pro choice if the choice is what it ought to be: would you rather be born into poverty, or be dead? If you can look me in the eye and honestly tell me that you would rather have been killed before birth than to have been born into poverty in this country, then and only then will I respect your belief in legal abortion. If you are honestly doing unto your young human being as you would have had someone else do unto you, I will not argue with you.
