Something that irritates the living daylights out of me:
Is it impossible for me to plan a surprise for Neil and have any part of it go right? For Valentine's Day I had used some old contacts to garner tickets to a concert of a group that is by far, his favorite. Pretty cool, right? The group is the Gipsy Kings and they are playing the House of Blues in Boston on Friday night. I came up with a super cute way to give him the tickets and he was very excited by my gift, only now he is losing his mind. Since the concert falls in the early evening on Friday, Neil is going to have to leave work early on that day. That doesn't quite jive with the military. Next is the ingenious thought that since the concert was in Boston that afterwards we'd save ourselves a long drive home and instead head to his parents; we haven't been there in a couple weeks. The light bulb went off there, but then he says that he has to drive back to Providence on Saturday in order to monitor a PFT (physical fitness test)for a pool event he had organized for his candidates. He says to me, that I can either come back with him to Providence and hang out while he does the monitoring and then head back with him to his parents or I can stay at his parents place while he does that and wait for his return. I had to interject and bring to his attention that his plan seemed a little asinine given that it would be fiscally irresponsible to drive all the way to Providence and back to Boston only to return to Providence again the very next day. A bit of waste, don't you think? I told him (ever so nicely) that wouldn't it make more sense to tell his assistant in the office that he was given a surprise gift for Valentine's Day and that he won't be able to monitor this PFT, could he do it for him. No, no, of course not, that would make sense! So, Neil lays this guilt trip on me about how this is something that he should do for work and he had this PFT planned a month ago, yadda, yadda, yadda, etc.

Am I losing my mind?

What is so bad about telling your staff that something nice was done for you regarding Valentine's day? Why does he have to treat it like a dirty little secret? Quite frankly, I'm a little hurt by the gesture because it seems as though he's embarassed. I would like it if he grew some cojones regarding his job and told his subordinate that he needed this favor done for him.

What do you think?
