Up until now I never knew what a relationship was. I guess it would be fair to assume that up until now, I've never had a real relationship; I've been practicing on the bench.
Neil is going through a rough patch at work. For those of you that don't know, he's an officer selection officer for the military. It's his job to go out everyday to selected colleges and universities, meeting people and gathering contacts. Due the present state of politics and action overseas, not too many people are very welcoming to his presence on campuses. So far he's been successful at making the mission numbers, but not without scrutiny from his highers. Not too long ago some hearsay came riding into his office. There were accusations brought up against his OSA (officer selection assistant). It's terrible and completely untrue, but never-the-less the damage has been done. Yesterday, his superior came down and relieved his OSA; they are moving him to an enlisted recruiting station in Fall River. Neil works out of a small office and they have given him big numbers to make for this current mission. Taking away his OSA with no immediate replacements is the equivalent of taking away a dying mans oxygen. Suffice it to say, Neil was quite overwhelmed and stressed out yesterday. I felt terrible for him and wanted to help in any and every way that I could, but there was nothing that I could do.
I guess that's when things got real for me. I care about him and it killed me to be helpless in this situation. I guess that's when things become real; when you care about the welfare and happiness of another person as much as you care about your own happiness and welfare.
Last night I drove over to Roger Williams University with him; he was invited by one of his candidates to speak to the "young republicans" group. If you know me well then you know that I'm the farthest thing from conservative in terms of politics. I have a poster with John, Robert, and Teddy on my bedroom wall. Perhaps opposites do attract? Lucky for him I don't believe in discussing politics and won't hold his political views against him. Anyway, we arrived and headed to the library. I was supposed to take pictures for the OSO website, but fell asleep at my post while I was actively listening to what was being said. Newport's replublican rep, Steve Cote, was on-hand for the meeting. He seemed like a nice guy, but he wasn't winning me over anytime soon; he and Neil had a difference of opinon. You see, Representative Cote is former Naval Jag lawyer and was lacking in military knowledge. While I was sitting at the end of the conference table, deep in thought, I discovered myself in an interesting position. The kids at the table (who clearly had alot to learn) were actively making comments about Hillary and Obama. I was in deep disguise; a wolf in sheeps clothing if you will. I just smiled and laughed where it was appropriate.
The evening ended with the season finale of Nip/Tuck. I missed the ten o'clock showing but caught the eleven o'clock repeat. What happened?! They can't go putting bullets and knives in all of their leads! However, Dr.Troy had his turn with the carver, so I guess it's fair. It's Sean's turn now. Personally I can't wait for next season due to the fact they ended the season with a cliffhanger.
Today is a new day and hopefully the news that Neil received this morning will be enough to get him through. The Sgt. Major called this morning and delivered diplomacy. He told Neil that his gunny would be staying until the end of the month in order to tie-up loose ends and train the two new assistants that are set to come on deck. That was music to his ears; in the time since he began his post he has built a repoire and friendship with the two men that work with him. Yesterday the Major came in and displayed his absolute lack of diplomacy and tact. It disgusted him to hear what he had said to his co-worker. Today Neil has a booth to run at a career fair taking place at Stonehill College. I hope to God that he has a day better than yesterday; I hope he gets a million potential candidates!
