First, I want to assure everybody that we will be safe. We're lucky in that this all happened the evening after the big earthquake drill we had, and Gemma and I had just re-discussed our emergency plans. PLUS, it will never get that far anyway.
(There's really, really, really no way it'll get to us. But we figure that fate favors the prepared, right?)
That said, it's getting to be a little nerve wracking. They've evacuated an area of Chino Hills about eight miles away from us, now. We've got our emergency kits together, just in case. My boss and one other co-worker are in much more danger in Corona, the co-worker I'm sure has been evacuated by now.
I can see flames to the south and the south-west from our apartment, and it seems like a long continuous line covering a 60 degree arc less than ten miles away. The firefighters are saying that the fire is still half a mile from homes in Chino Hills, but this fire has marched all the way from the 57 freeway to Chino Hills since around noon today, so it's just ... Gah. I'm not worried, but I'm worried, y'know?
Mission Animal Shelter have offered to look after animals including dogs and birds if we're evacuated and can't get to a freeway leaving California, but most of our preparedness is frankly making sure the dog and the bird are safe.
Crap. I just saw that they're evacuating on the other side of the freeway from my work, less than a mile away. And work's four miles away, so they're evacuating within five miles of us, now.
I don't think we'll get a lot of sleep tonight.
