Wintersmith and Google Translate

Nov 20, 2011 23:27

So, about a week ago I read Wintersmith, by Terry Pratchett. The book was awesome, and funny as hell, of course (and if any one of you guys has never read mr Pratchett's *amazing* Discworld books get to it RIGHT NOW), but there was just this thing I can't help but comment on.

There's this point in the book where the main character speaks Greek. Or, what's supposed to be Greek. Because syntax and grammar aside, the words were just... spelled in ways that made them nearly unrecognizable. Now, perhaps this was done on purpose, so that it looked Greek without it actually being Greek, considering this is the Discworld we're talking about.

But somehow, the way the words were put together, makes me suspect that Google Translate was involved. It just looks like the type. You know, just translate each word and never mind if Greek syntax needs a different structure than English.

And if that's actually the case... which again, I'm not saying it was. But, if. Really, mr Pratchett? Google translate?

*shakes head in amused exasperation*

discworld, silliness, language stuff, books, randomness, rumblings
