Scalzi makes a comment.
Oh waitaminute, so what you are saying, Mr Scalzi, is that people living in Ohio are missing out on big writing breaks?
ahem
How about people living in South-east Asia? There are many writers living in - say - Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. And they are hardly in the epicenter of Writing.
Note: SF/F is something of a niche and a rarity in Singapore. Yes, people do game. Yes, people do write. And yes, people know about the existence of sf/f, because there are occasional mentions of it in the media. And yes, (repeat)there are people who do write it. Now, when it comes to publishing it in traditional publishing, you get crickets, because traditional publishers are not receptive to the concept of sf/f. The last sf/f novel that came from Singapore is The Star Sapphire by Han May... and that was like in the 1980s or 90s. And that got published, because the author received an award from the Singapore Arts Council. Imagine the number of writers who are writing... but are not recognized for their writing.
And yes, as you see by the tone of the writing, it's one of my pet peeves.
So, please, Mr Scalzi, don't make comments like that. We might not be in the epicenter of Writing in America... but we are watching and observing all the shenanigans and pratfalls you guys are making. When do we get our big breaks and contracts? Perhaps, by the sheer combination of luck and connections. Meanwhile, many of us continue working hard on submitting our stories and quietly cross our fingers... And honestly, if we (god forbid) end up writing memoirs, poetry and garden-variety ghost stories, we might just get a chance... :P
And
this nicely summarizes my thoughts regarding writing just fiction in Singapore...
PS: I am up early, my mood dismal and decidedly crappy. And oh yes, I am not feeling well either.
