It's taken me a long time to realize how much I enjoy listening to The Hold Steady.
The band sounds like a band you would invite over to play at your party next friday night. They use guitars, horns, piano and pretty back up vocals. The lead vocalist isn't the best of singers and is a potential turn off for new listeners, but his lyrics are some fo my favorite I have ever heard. He takes a poetic but literal approach to partying and youth.
The lyrics are what make the band so appealing to me. Lyrics such as, "Southtown girls won't blow you away/But you know that they'll stay," and, "I can't stand all the things that she sticks in her skin/like sharpened ball point pens and steel guitar strings". The lyrics capture the strange, detatched and judgemental feeling I experience while at a party. I exist and I am there, but I feel like I am watching many people do stupid things.
Well, this has been a good waste of time. Pretty much, pick up "Boys and Girls in America" by The Hold Steady. It's a very fun and catchy cd. The album's only slow points are near the beginning, and the rest becomes legendary by the end.
