It took awhile for this one to grow on me. I think it is a fun tune but there is this 'haunting' quality to it. What a wonderful contradiction!

Holy crap, I get transported into time everytime I hear this one. I miss the early 2000s. Life was simpler back then. God, so many images cross my mind when I hear this one, mostly personal.

Such a beautiful music video. I love how she had evolved from teen sex kitten to a spiritual artist. The transportation is astounding! It's another one of my favorite tunes with a 'haunting' sound that I cannot resist!

I remember when this one came out. This was when I realized that there was more to Madonna than 'Material Girl' and 'Cherish', the latter of which I always associated with Little Mermaid.

Okay, Madonna stan hat coming on. Even though I like Lady Gaga, one thing that grinds my gears is how she is heralded as an ally for the gays via 'Born this way' (At least she was). I am not going to get into the BTW being a plagiarized song because 1) it's been done to the death but because 2) I like it, actually. To me, Gaga is more in love with the controversey but does not have anything to 'support' it, much less show for it. At least with Madge, she means it. Gaga talks about gays as 'outsiders' and as 'freaks'. Madonna treats them like people. To me, BTW lacks the mystique that Deeper and Deeper has because she ticks off every single oppressed minority. Madonna does not do that. She assumes that we are intelligent enough to know what she is talking about. Deeper and Deeper is about a gay man/woman trying to come into terms with his/her sexuality and wants to come out
'When you know the notes to sing/you can sing most anything'
Compare that to Gaga's ticking off every single letter of the LGTBQ group, it does not have the emotional pow. I like Gaga but you cannot turn a donkey into a Clydesdale (and donkeys are cute. See Disney's "Pinnochio"!)
My favorite version of this song of course is from The Girlie Show in 1993!

6. Sanctuary-"Bedtime Stories" (1994)

Another dark tune that does not get enough love. Confession? Everytime I listen to this song/album I always think of 'The Lion King'. This is mainly due to the fact that they both came out the same year and part of me wishes that I was older so that I could have borne witness and appreciate two artistic endeavors as they came out. I am also a history major and I am obsessive with numbers and years. I like to associate events and chronologically see how the sequence went. I guess another reason is that when 'Sanctuary' segues into 'Bedtime Stories', I get the image of comfort. After all, isn't that what we all wanted for poor Simba?

This is perhaps one of the freakiest videos I have ever seen. This looks like something out of Neil Gaiman's wet dreams.

a) Mugsy and Bugsy
b) late 80s childhood nostalgia
c) coldness

You know what? Now, I really wish Madonna was involved in the Lion King. This is a PERFECT song for the lionesses under Scar's rule. Just change the lyrics a bit and voila. God, the possibilities!
This song has been my mantra for the last two years, not for family purposes but for personal ones.
My favorite live version is this one from Japan 1990. I wish Madge can give us a DVD from Blonde Ambition.
